Are side lights at the bottom not the fog lights?
If they are then don't put them on together unless it's fog.

When you say 'side lamps' do you mean DRLs?

The bottom lights are the day running lights. As far as I know, they go off when the head lights are on, as they are not required.

ok so i cannot have both of them on at any time?? loads of cars have main headlamps on and spot/bottom lights on also. so on the passat there just used as DRL's and fogs? is that the case?

If your car has the cornering function, they will also light up when you're turning slowly, and are beamed in the direction of the turn.

Also, for some bizzare reason, they both come on when the car is in reverse :confused:

Are they not the fogs? Aren't the ones inside them the DRLs?

A lot of cars do this. Aids visibility if you're parallel parking and stuff.

Alot of them people are driving with their fogs on, and either dont know how, dont want to, or even know they are on.

so is it definate i cannot have the DRL's on at the same time as the main headlights? it seems so from your comments. have to say so far the new passat is a lovely drive. very smooth and comfortable. although with so many electronics onboard hopefully i wont have to much trouble later on down the road..

I think the EU regulations on DRL's specify that they must go off when sidelights, and by extension headlights, are switched on.

Not sure if they are fitted to the regular Passat by my Passat CC has cornering lights, they only come on upto speeds of 25mph and turning corners.

On the regular Passat the DRL's are located in the bumper next to the fog lights. The DRL's automatically go off when the dipped headlights are switched on. There used to be a button for manually switching them off or on but this has been removed on newer models now afaik.

I think the Passat is one of the only cars which has this setup with the drls under the bumper next to the fogs,if you see one its obvious they are not as bright as fogs, most others are using leds either in the bumper or the headlights.

Op you can still manually turn them off in the trip computer in setting but then there off all the time the DRL's. Otherwise there on all the time the lights are off.

That's because they were a low cost afterthought as DRLs were made mandatory on newly launched cars from 2011 and that model Passat was really only a facelift of the previous model.

How did you get your license? To me you seem to want the parking lights and fog lights on all the time. Do you not realise they are only to be used in the fog and therefore you should have your full lights on!

You do realize the lights in the picture that was posted are not *** lights, but DRL's - or do you just like to jump to incorrect conclusions?

Maybe a bit of both! If I'm mistaken no need to get your knickers in a twist. You point to my mistake and offer some help to OP.

OP has stated he wanted his DRL's on at the same time as the headlights. Post 4 or 5 was me saying this isn't possible, with an explanation as to why.

I often find that reading a thread before posting, is quite a good thing to do. Saves jumping to incorrect conclusions.
