    Seeing as I swam about four times since May not too bad.

    Stroke count slipped out from 36 per 100m for first 100m to 40 for last, and pacing wasn't great either 1:39 out to 1:51

    I was at the pool with my kids, do decided to throw down a "marker" to measure progress against over the next few months. No huge effort involved, 1:35 for the first 100m but I deliberately eased off a bit for the rest- mainly so I could be sure I'd get the whole 400 done!

    The time is fair enough, for no recent pool activity and little overall swimming. I'll be looking to take at least a minute off this over the lifetime of this table.

    Did 1km warm up, then a lane came free so just had a go. Would love to get down to 5:30. Got tired very quickly so hopefully have some room to make that improvement

    Have been working on increasing mine over the last two months, invested in a metronome, one of the best pieces of kit I own, has really improved my speed endurance and my general speed

    To be fair my 400m TT is based on basically not swimming so form and fitness are out the window.

    I'd measure more per 50m than per minute to be honest, around 38 strokes per 50m (in a 25 but not paying much attention to the kick off) (which at the moment isn't that much south of a minute)

    I understand the desire to increase the stroke rate but my concern would be how you achieve the increase. If it is by moving the same about of water faster then fine, but if its my slipping through the water........

    My issue up to this has just been a lack of speed, I dont have that sprint capability. I was happy enought this year that I was fresh coming out of the water, my biggest weakness being that my legs drop and that is helped with a wetsuit.
    So I'm thinking increase the stroke rate and hopefully speed with maybe some loss of swim form and then go back and try and rectify that. Currently our swim sessions are split pretty much 50-50 between technique and speed/endurance work.

    This will easily be improved on as the lanes were busy and i had to wait a few times in between lengths.

    Cyclist who did first tri last in august. Might get to the pool and try this for motivation. Although My times gonna be around 12mins (for real)

    Does a wetsuit pool swim count? ;-) tried the suit in the outdoor pool here in lqnzarote this morning and couldnt believe the difference. Managed 05:27 for a steady effort, reckon id crack 5 in it if i went full wack. Never realised the benefit!!

    You have to go for it! It'll be interesting to refer against your non-wetsuit pool 400 time.

    I average about 12.30 comfortably in 750mt sprints. Wetsuits are a god send for me.
    Related;
    400 pool time was always about 7.10 or so. I just a went sub seven this week (6.55)when I decided I should try kicking.

    Unfortunately didnt have the time, had to get the suit dry to pack! I'll have to add to this soon though, dont wana lose my swim work this winter! Takes too long to return.     Well it's a start. Hopefully another 6-8 weeks and I can get back to were I was in June. The aim before next season is a sub 6 25m. Hopefully I can make a similar comment to Bambatta this time next year as I am aiming for 2 HIM attempts.

    Same as my jul/aug times but hadnt been doing that much work since aug. Also unlike those times did this without my temp-trainer so pretty happy. Hope to go sub 5.30 and beyond this winter

    might as well through my hat in - might get me doing this regularly hopefully. Delighted with that time but it'll be a challenge to improve on it! prob one of the best times I put in this year

    Quote the last post, remove the
    at the top and [ /quote] at the bottom of the post otherwise the next person cant quote the table and then the easiest way to add is copy someone, hit return after the last person on the table, paste it on that new line before the [/table] and edit to your details - name, pool size, time under the applicable month (by counting the lines across)

    Hope that makes sense.

    Great to see you back logging some numbers dude. Can we take it you are on the comeback trail?

    I can give you a very long answer or a short answer, so I'll stick to the short answer for the time being! I've been training at a low heart rate for a while now, and the symptoms I've been suffering for the past year or two have cleared up. I'm now planning to throw a running interval session into the mix once a week and I guess if the body holds up to that after a month or two, then yes, I'll be on the comeback trail.
    Too many false starts to date, so I'm not going near a training log until I'm sure things are ok.
    And that's the short answer!

    Second 400TT in Oct and 39sec faster :) Didn't kill myself on the first 150m this time :rolleyes: Controlled the first 200m, keeping breathing under control and not particullarily swimming as if it's a TT at all. Had to be careful though because I momentarily lost focus, plan was to start to pick it up in the 3rd 100 and build, build, build to a finish.

    Training wise? My personally I've not swam really in a year. Only 50km or so this year. So my plan is to actually swim. Get some local muscular endurance back, think about my stroke and then when I feel comfortable in the water a speed set, a strength set and an endurance set a week. If I do that I will make gains! Especially as going from effectively nothing!

    paddles , bands, drag suits , parachutes ,swim with runners ie you want to create more resistence than usual, think of it as overgeared work or hill reps on the bike.
    especially for a beginner i would spread this over more sessions a week to reduce risk of injuries.
    I am a big fan of paddles for the peolple they work for BUT there would be some coaches including garry rodriquez that do not advocate paddles for weaker swimmer.
    his arugements are worth listening too and to be considert, if you tend to have shoulder issues when you swim.
    advisable is to start with small padless if you decide to use them built up distance slowly, try it focus less on first phase of stroke.

    might be better to move this to somwehre as I think this is a thread about 400m tts .

    I don't like paddles either.

    To clarify I don't like paddles for people who (a) haven't good technique (would you squat with bad technique or use a leg press until strong enough to hold?) (b) haven't built up to them.

    I think band and buoy is great. Then band on its own. Band, buoy and paddles. then band and paddles. Starting small on paddles and building up.

    I have a parachute as well which is "interesting" but a pig in pools with people getting stuck in it. Swimming in a t-shirt is good. A t-shirt that is way too long for you is better.

    Many ways to skin a cat but I strongly feel caution is the watch word here.
