Weekly Time Trial Series - Leinster

Just looking to gauge interest in a weekly time trial series.

A1 Coaching (www.a1coaching.net) is going to host the series but there are still some unknowns.

Is a static venue preferable to changing venue each week? The same venue each week offers the advantage of being able to measure improvements in performance as the season progresses but does that outweigh the monotony of repeatadly riding the same road?

Suggestions for venue? The overriding concern is safety: minimum turns, left hand turns when necessary, low traffic flow, good surface.

Would people like to see the series as a Cycling Ireland sanctioned series or independently insured so as to give the opportunity to include non licensed riders and triathletes?

    I'd welcome your thoughts.

Midweek please. Other than that bring it on.
Venue - not Batterstown. Used by clubs a few nights a week for races and TTs.

    Somewhere new would be nice.

When? If it's an off-season thing that rules out midweek evenings but there might be some interest in a weekend morning thing - a cleaner alternative to CX for those wanting a bit of suffering to keep them ticking over in the winter. Justifies some bike purchases too.

If you're going to wait until spring you'd probably be best trying to work around the club leagues so Thursdays are out. Tuesdays?

Batterstown is notoriously over-raced but TTs are much less disruptive once you make sure everyone parks sensibly (or rides out).

There was another thread started by someone with a similar idea - nothing came of it but the thread would give you some opinions anyway. Can't search on the phone but you should find it.

I'd be interested in a series anyway.

Here's the thread from last year

With the vets a small number of courses works best - it gives some variety as well as the opportunity to improve times (although there's a tendency to do that anyway as the season progresses and weather generally improves). It also reduces disruption to specific areas (as already is the case with the Batterstown courses)

    Great idea.

I suppose the simple question to be answered is what type of time trial course is wanted.

The traditional British model consists of two options. The standard 10mile, 25 mile routes on fast flat courses (typically dual carriageways). The advantage of this is that similar distance events can be loosely compared on different courses. The disadvantage is trying to find suitable courses that are accessible and "relatively" safe. The British model of fast DC routes is a somewhat controversial topic as having been a regular contributor to british timetrialling fora i was surprised to note the number of obituaries posted of competitors in the last 5 years and the increased number of competitors deciding not to race on certain courses. To counteract traffic issues the traditional british scene uses early saturday and sunday morning starts

The second model is that of the Sporting Courses (SPOCO)which are run on quieter routes but have a varied parcours. I suppose the recent Noel Hammond TT run by orwell could be described as a SPOCO TT. These are not as popular as the fast TT's as comparison of different courses is not practical as the distances and parcours are different for each one, so in effect you are racing against yourself and competitors you know to be of similar ability on the day.

To be honest i would favour a mixture of both i.e. one or two fast courses where the traditional barriers can be attempted (sub 60 for 25miles and eventually Sub 20 for 10) and a few sporting courses.

I would be willing to help out in getting this up and running but as was linked already others have floated this idea in the past and the idea has not gotten off the ground.

Will the roads be re surfaced for the Giro? Could look to see if there's any routes along that if they are.
I'd be in on either weekend winter or midweek spring TTing and would love standard 10 and 25 mile flattish loops
Same course being used wouldn't bother me

Also interested in this. A few different courses used in rotation would offset the monotony factor but you'd also get to gauge progress.

    Anything happening with this?

Is it a chipped event and who supplies the equipment?
Im injured at the moment so Ran a hill climb TT event within my club , timed it manually using synchronised watches but interested in cost involved for a chipped event.

    Sorry for going off topic.:)

Why chipped for a TT? Everyone sets off at set intervals and so long as you have someone with a stopwatch at each end, or an out and back course, the timing is going to be pretty accurate

Need someone at both ends for timing for the hill climb TTs , a few mountain goats and plenty of climbs near us so lads like the hills . some time soon I hope to partake as do the other people who helped time so would be handy if chipped . One person does the timing on the flat TTs alright which frees me up for photos.
Was wondering what other clubs/groups were doing. Would also free up people to do a bit of marshalling on different routes when not cycling.

I think it would be handy if it wasn't cost prohibitive to have it chipped and the download the info onto a lap top as opposed to working out times and putting that into an excel sheet. Lazy out:D
