    Not Your Ornery Onager

I'd be guessing at a price, but it will be a fair bit cheaper if you do all the preparation work yourself.

You'd want to know what you're doing to do the prep work yourself.

Thanks for posts.I could take off all trim and lights properly but think I am out
of my depth with prep work. Was told by mechanic anyone can spray but the real skill is in the prep.Has anybody done the prep themselves would love to
know how they got on.Thanks lads:confused:

I've repaired and sprayed damaged wings before with fair degree of success but I dont think I be competent enough to prep a whole car. At the end of the day it depends on what kind of finish you want. I cant imagine anyone doing a half decent job for anything less than €1500. A restoration respray would probably cost anything up to €5k while an excellent acceptable job would probably come in at €2-€3k. If you go for the cheaper option it will make the car look a lot better but wont really do anything for it's value especially if you were selling it on to a collector.

Here's a bike I prepared earlier . It was resprayed with rattle cans believe it or not :D. The whole thing took about 6 months.

Deadly job on the bike emeldc. Thanks for the post.I just want outside body sprayed so engine and interior staying put. Will take off all trim myself to lower
cost and I also already sprayed alloys.Cant afford higher than two grand so will have to shop around i guess. Its a 88 200 so not worth spending five grand.Runs like watch and got nct first time pity paint is shot left under tree and i think sap ruined it.Thanks for advice.

Looking 2k upwards roughly. Try ag paint renovator first, a damn sight cheaper!

Put up a picture and give us a look. You would be surprised what you can do with the proper polish and an electric polisher. But if your budget is €2k you should do quite well with that if you go for the respray.

As others have said, a machine polishing can do wonders for a car, whole lot cheaper than a respray as well.

Thanks lads.Tried compound and electric polisher already paint still completely dull.A friend of mine that used to run a detailer company had a go also no luck will put up pics soon.If I can get a good job done for around 2 grand will be happy.:)

Pity the detailing didnt help. I'd be surprised if you couldn't get a good job done for 2k.

What about a red car gone very pink. cutting it back and polishing only works for a little while.

Hard to justify 2K on a non classic, if its only worth a few k at best.

Do you seal the paintwork after polishing? That would help with the durability of it and wouldn't turn pink as quickly I would think

I haven't done anything with it yet.

I'm just going on memory of a friends car, a Mk1 MR2. He used to have re-polish it every 3 months or so for a few hours. I wouldn't like to invest time and money if it was not going to last a reasonable amount of time. I just don't have the spare time to do it.

I used to spray my own cars many years ago in a friends garage . At first I was using cellulose and later moved on to the base coat and lacquer .
The preparation is absolutely critical - and takes a lot of time , which is what makes it expensive.
And I also found that a car may look 'straight' until you go over it panel by panel - you may find quite a few small dents , scratches etc . And if you want a good job they all need sorting - very time consuming .
As was pointed out unless you have previous experience it would be best not to attempt it . If you perpare it yourself and the finished job doesn't turn out great - the blame could be put on the preparation .

Depends on dents, even the smallest dent will be magnified in a respray, I would think 1,000eur as it's black and not a metallic colour and that your not changing colour it makes it a easier job.
