Wednesday hilarity: insurance renewal just came in...

    ...got an email about my upcoming renewal at the end of October. Last year, I had to go with 123.ie for the whopping sum of 1300 Euro, because I had no NCB (32, EU license since 1999 but didn't have a car since 2009, so my previous bonus expired).

    This years' quote, for the very same ****ty 1.4 litres, is...

    1711.32 Euro

    I am probably gonna give them a call in the tone of "did you smoke a tree?". And probably they did - their own website quotes me at 764 Euro for a new policy 0_0.

    I know I can shop around and move to a different company (and will do, AA quoted me around 550), but this kind of behaviour should not be tolerated - it's a chancers approach, "let's send a huge bill and see if they pay".

    The truth is that some people out there simply don't shop around for insurance. This is why insurance companies send out high renewals. Then same people get back onto them and they drop a few hundred euro and the customer thinks they did well haggling.

    I am pretty sure some people just pay:D
    I used to switch policies every year, last year stayed with nononsense because they were the cheapest. Always shop around before renewal. Last year my quotes were between 350 and 1800 euro... Happens all the time.

    Ah, so you can probably answer my next question: how does it work with the NCB? I assume the new insurance company will want papers from the old ones...do they put up any "passive aggressive" resistance by "forgetting" to send you the documentations? (In Italy, they do...).

    You always get your NCB sent to you before renewal date - sometimes it is there along with renewal offer. Nothing special, just a piece of paper so you could have missed it when received renewal notice.

    Ok, thanks - no documents in the post yet, I just got an "invitation" email with the outlandish figure.

    Your current insurance company is obliged by regulations to issue you your NCB schedule at the time of renewal. If you received the renewal by email then it should be attached to that.

    All most insurance companies want when you are taking out a new policy with them is a copy of your driving license your NCB schedule and of course your payment.

    Yeah, happened to me as well. Crazy stuff.
    I just jumped ship and got a reasonable quote from someone else.

    IME no ... with the exception of 123.ie. In my time with them they demanded payment for premiums already paid, renewed my insurance with the incorrect reg no, failed to deliver policy cert and disc until we were weeks past renewal, "forgot" to send NCB cert once they realised I was moving, "resurrected" a car I had sold two years before and sent me a renewal notice for it, etc etc.

    Move away, far away from 123.ie. Even if you pay more (unlikely) at least your are not in danger of driving around thinking you are insured having paid a premium only to receive insurance documentation for a car you don't own.

    Absolutely - I only am with them because they were the one and only company that didn't outright refuse to even quote me last year...

    It's possible they emailed it to you. Check if there is an attachment on any recent emails and then if the NCB is in that attachment, probably on page 5 or 6.

    My insurance with Liberty last year was around 450 euro, got renewal letter- 770 euro :) tried AIG insurance- 410 euro!
    Funny thing is, for a joke I did the quote with Liberty online and they quoted me 50 euro less!!!!

    I had a renewal from Allianz which was very reasonable and looking around it wasn't worth changing. I also had house insurance with these people and a couple of years ago I did switch for one year. I've had no problems with the value of either car or household renewals since, maybe they noticed?

    Pays to shop around at renewal time.
    insurance companies exploit customer loyalties and know we all hate shopping around.

    Call them and see what quote they give, they may have your car down wrong as an import or not recorded as having immobilizer and they simply don't want to quote for cars like this and that's the reason for the PFO quote.

    They done the same with me, I moved and got a better deal

    They done the same to me they wanted higher money for the same ltr car (1.9) I changed the car i got a 2.5ltr and they quoted me 50euro higher so i went to the AA who gave it to me for nearly half of what 123 wanted.

    There is a tiny bit of truth in this; The car is a 12 years old 1.4 Megane Coupe' which, in a brilliant display of "knowledge" of the Irish market, Renault decided to name "Super Sport 16v" (the same car, exactly the same, is called a much more innocent "Dynamique" in the UK). Of course, Irish insurance companies consider it a "sportscar" :eek:

    Did you not get a motordocuments pdf with the email? one of the pages in that is the NCB.
