The fact that within "Social Programs", the biggest chunk goes to - wait for it - no, not welfare and benefits, but pensions.

    That's a pretty cool site.
Was surprised (for some reason) the debt was the 3 group of items and biggest single item.

The debt shows up 4th for me, behind Social, Health and Education. What's really worth noting is that the bank bailout is only 23% of the debt.

Over €450 to debt repayments. Only 35c to libraries, 31c to the Fire Service and 7c to the Secret Service...

    ...we have a Secret Service?

    Pensioners vote.

So they have always been insulated from cuts.

Just 1/4 of the social welfare budget is dole

Well this slider is one way to shut up the tax the rich guys. Just look at the % difference of rate of tax between 11,000 and 150,000 and at the end of the day your still the same people using the services.

    Great little site for sure.

I was surprised that so little goes to the Environment actually. Although maybe there is more money under Polluter Pays etc...
    However....

damn Centenarian's taking almost €0.50 for their bounty.... Let's get 'em!!!! :D

EDIT: Who is behind the site and are the calculations trust worthy and/or accurate

I left my job because of tax I was paying and not really seeing any benefit.
Now I'm on the dole and plan to take full advantage of the system.

Not one bit ashamed either, Ireland is a fcking joke and it doesn't reward hard work what so ever. I realized in short time it rewards useless bastards.

The harder you work, apparently you're an idiot...who'd have thunk it?
It's run by the rich for the rich, always was.

I fully expect FF to get back into office next election and what difference does it make anyway? FF, FG...all the same, clean useless.

What grinds my teeth are these chimpanzees on the radio shows crying about politicians breaking promises....waken up morons, politicians are professional liars -- All of them.

But they still go vote for them in an election. Gimps.

€300 of it goes to the Dole for me. As opposed to €183 for illness/carers/disability.

    Something's out of whack there.

67,131 euro in taxes if you earn 150k. It's amazing that the more you earn the less likely you are to use these services and yet you pay even more.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭folan

not surprised at pensions being so high. would have thought that people were aware that its a major area of expenditure.

also fully expect it to be slashed by the time i get to that age, which is why i have a pension fund now.

Not that amazing. Its a standard redistribution of wealth that occurs in nearly every quasi-socialist democratic state in the World.

Look at the Government tab and prepare to have your eyes water at how much of your tax goes to Civil Service pensions compared to the other Government agencies in the tab.

There are either a **** load of Civil Service pensioners or, more likely, we're funding a fairly jet set lifestyle for a certain number of ex Civil Servants who got out when the time was right.

Probably the most corrupt and injust society this side of Russia we've got going on here.

How long had you to wait to qualify for the dole? Can you intentionally make yourself unemployed and get dole straight away? If you can the country is indeed a joke.

    That wasn't a genuine offer....sarcasm.

There's an old Chinese proverb that exemplifies the failure of leadership in Ireland today and one that applies reasonably well to old Bertie Ahern and his mentor/crony, Charlie Haughey.

"A Fish rots from the head down."

I'm not willing to divulge how I can work the system but I didn't have to wait.
I just observe what other people do. Ireland will be consumed by crime because it's fostered a welfare system that's completely unsustainable.

I have no long term plans to remain in the country but If I did get a cushy number with the government, I'd obviously stay.

Get out before someone reports you. There are a lot more people out there these days willing to report welfare fraud.

I don't think the welfare system is completely unsustainable otherwise all payments would have to be abolished. But it is not fully sustainable and the very unpopular government decision to reduce Child Benefit and abolish the extra week at Christmas for pensioners has made it a bit more sustainable. And something else which may be easily overlooked. There has been no increase in most pensions etc since 2010 which in effect is a cut and I don't see much prospect of any increase soon. Mind you they are much better off comparatively than cushy number government workers who are on a pay freeze since August 2008 and who took big pay cuts as well.

Are you allowing for the fact that almost all retired civil servants do not receive old age pension, but have a larger civil service pension by that amount? Probably not, most discussion on these matters do not bother with relevant details.

Bankers in collusion with politicians raped the country and you think I'm a fraudster?

A Fish Rots from the Head down.

I have watched too many people work hard in this country and end up with nothing while at the same time watch so many others do as little as possible, yet end up with a better standard of living...I can't accept I'm a fraudster because that would mean the whole country is full of fraudsters, wouldn't it?

The system was setup by wealthy for their own purposes and I'm not going to assimilate anymore.

They view people that work hard and be honest as fools because that's not how they operate.

You don't get rewarded for honesty and hard work in Ireland, quite the opposite.

If keep increasing your income, you get more and more tax on it. Something which Labour or SF struggle to get their head around(We have one of the most fair income tax systems in the World). But according to SF and Labour the last few budgets have been an attack on the Poor, when in reality its been a **** load of taxes on the few in society who work hard and pay a lot of tax

67% of income tax is paid by the top 10% in society, while 50% of income earners pay no tax. Thats a what fair tax system is.

Pensions being almost as big as the education budget for the entire primary and secondary level education is actually laughable.

Maybe I'll just stay here in Ireland on the dole for another 20 years like a lot of other people I know.

Why work hard and struggle to pay a mortgage on a house when you can get a free one off the government?

There's no point working in Ireland, unless you're working for the government of course which I do intend on pursuing at some point.

If that fails, I'll move to a country where there are sensible policies in place for a robust society and economy.

The bank bailouts have proven if you're a cheat, you'll be rewarded.
Bankers are laughing at how stupid people in Ireland are and I'm not stupid enough to play along with their little game.

For every €100 spent on Gardai, we spend €66 on our Defence Forces.

Exactly who do we need to defend against? I think we need more defence from burglars, thieves & violent scumbags than we do from a foreign nation. So it should be more like €133 vs €33.

Depends on which figures you believe it's about the same as the Taoiseach's Department in State Administration.

10% of it is pensions though. And some would come from Shared Services and OPW

Local Government Support is tiny, which explains a lot of the parish pump politics here.

According to the website i pay €53,610.80 in tax.Do i begrudge the less fortunate?,no.Do i begrudge the government for having such a high tax rate and little to show for it?,most definitely.

Sinn Fein are aiming to get their votes from "the working joe" (or perhaps the not working joe) by slandering people on the higher tax rate.I honestly think if the "working joes" were educated on what shite sinn fein spout over higher earners not feeling the pain we'd be heading in a very different direction.

I can't take another tax hike,i'll be paying elsewhere,it's not that i'm broke or anything it's just that i'd rather pay my tax somewhere it's appreciated, used correctly as well as coming out with more money at the end of the month. Why would i pay tax here when i can get it cheaper elsewhere?

And it's not only me,there are a lot of people who can transfer there employment status to another country here in Ireland,if they keep tackling the high earners they'll eventually have nobody to pay the taxes.
