i posted this in the sopranos/wire thread (both are great - its jsut that the wire is better) but it hasn't got much notice there so i'll post here

ok...ive watched breaking bad, sopranos, the wire, basically twice, cept for the last series of breaking bad

    tbh there isn't much i haven't watched

i've just finished watching the newsroom....it was engagingly ok-ish. the newsie bits are good (although hindsight is a great way to look back on an event). the relationships and love triangles betwen the lot of them is irritating, although the dialogue is sharp and quirky enough to keep me watching

so on that basis i have just started watching the west wing

im only three episodes in and, i have to say, i'm finding it a bit schmaltzy. again the banter between the characters is good but its just all those moments, and there have been a good few already, where the music kicks in and president bartlett goes all wise man...well its a bit bleurrghhh

does it get better or am i wasting my time? there are another 151 episodes to go

It's totally worth it for episode 150. Trust me.

    west wing is great

seems to stagnate around season 5/6, but last season and a half is really great

    huge time investment however

I only watched the last three series of this show and I loved it. It is a clever show with fast moving dialogue.

Not one to watch when half cut or half asleep.

but do the writers ever hold back on the schmaltz factor?

but do the writers ever hold back on the schmaltz factor?

I had to look the word up, but I cant really remember the subject of fat rendered from domestic fowl being a main plot line in the first season :pac:

I dont recall the storytelling really changing from series to series, only the stories themselves, so I reckon if you've not gotten hooked by mid season 1, its not gonna be for you

The West Wing is amazing. When people keep mentioning how the Wire or Sopranos are the best shows ever, it annoys me when people forget that and the Shield.

I want to punch Sorkin's dialogue in the face.

The West Wing is, tv-wise, one of the longest, time consuming, investment of time you will ever make but is absolutley worth every second.

Think about the Wire, it probably took you 4/5/6 episodes to get into it, you'll probably find the same with The West Wing but it is totally worth it. Would love to watch that show as a first timer again

The West Wing of is undoubtedly one of the greatest shows ever. The finale to season one had me in tears and goosebumps. Do yer self a favour...... Watch it. If you're still interested not sure after Two Cathedrals..(the season one finale).... Check your pulse

Deadwood is up there with The Wire. Trust me. Dialogue in The West Wing is not something I could ever stick.

OP - are you only interested in recent (say late 1990s onwards) programmes?

If not - there's a world of great archive television out there.

I enjoyed it but thought overall it was far too preachy and up its own ass.

I'm sure by now you've either finished the whole set of The West Wing or you've given up. You seemed to be stuck on the President going all 'wise old man' on it!
    Did you ever finish it?
