Shipping a bike abroad?

I'm in the UK for a few weekss, possibly longer all going well. I couldn't bring my bike over when I was traveling for logistical reasons, but now I'm starting to miss it and can't really afford to buy something that won't fall apart underneath me over here.

Before I left home, I packed my bike up properly in a soft bike bag; pedals off, seatpost out, rear mech off and cable tied to the seatstay, handlebars off etc etc. so my parents didn't have much messing to do if I wanted it sent over.

Has anyone ever sent a bike with a courier? Are there any other steps I should take including the above? Can you recommend a courier?

    Thanks

Decathlon Triban? Sell after you get set up?
Do you want hassle and risk if not in a settled place?

They're £300, didn't think it would cost that much to send my bike over, and I doubt I'd get even 50% of that back if I sold it afterwards.

I know it's not cheap, but I'm guessing you have a bike worth 2k plus? It would be prudent to have it insured for transit, can't see that being cheap, even then I'd be reading terms and conditions of contract.

There is transit risk and unless you have somewhere secure for bike is security a concern once over?

Your bike your money just a few thoughts. 2nd bike that you could use as commuter later?

Nah, my training bike probably isn't even worth half that (dolan preffisio with 105). Most expensive part is the power2max chainset. Security over here isn't a major issue, girlfriends apartment seems very secure, and in a good area judging by the caliber of the cars parked outside.

I'd only be shipping the good bike over if I know I'm staying a bit more long term.

I bought my good bike from London, shipped it over via UPS for £50 sterling. Okay that was in its original box but it got here in one piece.

Have a look at anyvan.ie You put in the details of your job - what you're sending, size of package, pick-up address and delivery address. Then you get quotes from various different drivers. They have a feedback system, so you can read what others have said about them, and most will have in-transit insurance for up to €10,000. I recently sent a large painting to the UK and used this site. Cost me €90 and included insurance to the full value.

I had a MTB shipped from York to Dublin last year. Used http://www.shiply.com/ to get a quote. Think it was about €90 in the end. Next day delivery. Man with a van who took very good care of the bike.

You can get the train/boat over with it, I've done the route before a one way ticket is 27.95 sterling. Only problem is it takes 12-15 hours depending on whether you are on the swift ferry.

All in all a finacialy cheap option but time consuming.

Got the sail and rail over last Saturday, had the bike all packed to bring with me and even paid the extra fare to bring it, but decided not to at the last minute as I was already bringing a case and a dog with me. Glad I didn't as it was stressful enough with the above.

It was cheap alright, €55 from Dublin to London, got the 8:45am swift ferry and was in London for 4pm. But it'd be too much to go home, collect it, and do all of that again :o

Tell me about it, I had 3 suitcases when I did it, struggle to say the least

Cheap ryanair home and train back could be done in about 15-16 hours door to door.....perhaps a challenge ;-)

Bleugh, imagine doing that amount of traveling in one day :o

Got a quote of £60 to have it collected from my parents house and delivered to the apartment in London next day by a man with a van with very positive customer feedback, might be the way to go!

Did you speak to Barry Rabbit in Deliver it? Sent a few things with them. Great service and well priced.
