I was just on the road from Galway towards Craughwell.... Huge flash just lit the sky up in the east.
Anyone see it or know what I was?

Sorry, I'll stop lighting my farts, I know it's childish, but old habits die hard.

    Spoiler Alert: Iridium Flare

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Anyway: hate to be a spoilsport, but it was almost certainly an Iridium Flare.

The website Heavens Above has a prediction service, and it tells me that one was visible in Galway at 21:03 this evening, in the east-south-east direction (111° bearing) at 53° above the horizon. Since you weren't in Galway centre, there would be some variation in the time and position in the sky, but that's close enough for rock 'n' roll ...

Pretty sure Iridium Flares dont make "flashes" in the sky. If anything they look like the space station passing over, except fainter, or even a shooting star.

Its most likely lightening. We've been having thunder and lightening quite a bit the past 2 nights.

lot of lightning around these parts the last day or two, (south) anyways op, about ten years ago was in a car driving eastward from Galway and there were a whole load of these huge big flashes in the sky, not lightning it was like a very fast lighthouse beam that engulfed the entire sky. The driver noticed it first, we were all looking out the window waiting for it to happen again and when it did we all went silent, it was the freakiest thing. To make matters worse the tape deck in the car started slowing down til the music was just a drone and the engine began shuddering in stops and starts with the headlights dimming in unison.

The car eventually came to a halt on the side of a road in the middle of nowhere, it was dark and there were no other discernible features than hedgerows and trees around us. We got out of the car and tried to push it in off the road but saw that both the tyres on the driver side were flat! We were all a bit freaked out but the boys managed to put on brave faces and get a least one of the tyres changed (the other was more of a slow puncture that we would live with if it got us the hell out of there)

We did get back on the road again but not one of us spoke a word for the rest of the journey.

I saw a fireball shooting across the sunny sky in Arklow in the summer of 2001 at around 16:30 while cycling home from work. No one else saw it, nor the papers. Like a meteorite. Lasted all of 3-4 secs.
