Was wondering is there much of a difference in the two Arts.

I just starting Kick boxing. And wondered if Thai Boxing was worth trying also. Or are they much the same.

Anyone with a decent amount of experience in both?

I have done both. Far prefer Thai. It is slower paced but higher intensity.

    I have done both meself
    still doing kickboxing though

I found muay thai slow paced if im honest, but seemed as if you stuck at it it would pay of better as their is much more to it , just at my age now id rather stick with something ive been doing most of my life then trying to learn something new.

kickboxing for me was the obvious choice, I prefer it because its fast paced learning, and i grew up learning it so alot of my mates are in it with me, also the tournaments for it are quite good

but if i had to start from early childhood again id go with muay thai id probably be a master at that by now haha

have done bout much prefer thaiboxing, no fancy moves just basic effective strikes that work

That's not actually an easy comparison to make as the word "kickboxing" can mean a lot of different things. There is light contact kickboxing and heavy/full contact. There are kick-boxing styles based on karate/tkd/kempo/kung-fu/whatever. Some styles of kick-boxing have belts and uniforms, some don't.

Anyway I've trained kick-boxing in a place that was basically ITF TKD without the uniforms, a kick-boxing club that was vaguely karate-based that trained for semi and full contact, and a muay Thai place. Muay Thai was my favourite.

You never trained to climb up on someone's thigh and knee them in the face? You've missed out - so much fun.

Actually, I think I prefer that one.

These were never sold to us as real moves in the place I trained, but we did them now and then just for a bit of fun.

I'll just say first that I'm probably completely bias as I train Thai but there is a huge difference between Kickboxing and Thai boxing IMO.

It might well be just the difference in the scoring system (kickboxing scored on the number of strikes vs Thai boxing scored on effective strikes) leading to a completely different approach/training method but the end result is usually very apparent.

To put it another way, I find kickboxing strikes tend to be quite fast, tippy tappy point scores whereas Thai strikes are thrown with the sole intention to do damage.

Again, as a Thai practitioner, I'm probably completely bias.

I sparred with a kickboxer last night and it was infuriating. Constant movement, quick tappy kicks.

I was more annoyed by the speed at which he was able to move and my inability to counter it mind.
