Is it that main shopping strips are high streets and main roads are main streets? That's what I always thought.

There's a High St here in Galway, but no Main St.

So the term sits very well with me.

And Galway ain't no Little Britain city.

Its the most Irish city of the lot. :p

And what's with the way every time Father Ted rang Father Larry Duff he always got killed but in a future episode he'd be there again.

He most certainly didn't appear to be 'tremenjous' fun to me.

Tullamore has had a "High Street" for years (probably named as it is uphill!)

It only got a "Main Street" several years ago when a local developer created a new street of shops and called it "Main Street", I think there were even some objectors to the name at the time.

Whats with this trend for substituting the very Irish term of "Main Street" in favour of the very English "High Street"?

    For example:

    http://www.irishexaminer.com/search/?cx=004422957488353982429%3A4gb73lvknqy&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=UTF-8&q=high+street&x=12&y=7

And who decided that doctors must now be known as GPs?

    Very Little Britain:D

Irish Examiner is a West Brit paper, sure what would you expect?

Anyone that uses Hight St. over here should be chastised, anyone that uses 'mom' should be slapped...hard.

Where I come from we call it... Shop Street.

Because it's where all the shops are you see. City fathers weren't long on fancy words. Gets the job done though.

What if the mother in question is from the United States?

After looking at an old map of my town and it seems the street known as high street has had that name for at least 100 years.

Calling it main street would look strange though as its not near being the most important street with the most shops.

So of I'm addressing a letter to a person living in High street in Dublin city I should actually call it Main Street? A logic only your mom could agree with!
