Liam Adams Guilty, Justice at last for Aine

Liam Adams has finally been convicted of raping and sexually abusing his daughter Aine when she was aged between 5 and nine years old.
His daughter has shown such great courage and determination in her years fighting for justice, I hope this verdict brings her some level of closure.

Do please explain the 'logic' behind that remark.

Read that he raped her whilst her mother was in hospital giving birth to her brother.

Jaysus. What a vile disgusting animal he is. Let's hope he gets a hefty sentence that befits such depraved and disgusting behavior.

You seem to the one bringing politics into a rape story.

What a stupid post. Trying to make political points about sex abuse.
    You should be ashamed.

Takes a pretty twisted mind to try to use the story of one young womans bravery and determination to get justice into a chance to do some personal slagging off.
    Be ashamed, be rightly ashamed.

If she followed SF's advice during much of the 70s-00s she would have no-one to turn to. "Don't talk to the police, Speak to a solicitor":mad:

Actually she says she was encouraged to go to the police by her uncle Gerry Adams. But this is not a story about Gerry Adams od Sinn Fein, it is a story of courage, bravery, determination and finally vindication.
I really fail to see why people should use Aine's story to take cheap shots at her uncle or his politics.

A very brave and courageous woman. I can only hope that when the sentencing day arrives, the judge will give him the most severe sentence possible.

This story relates to a woman, a victim of sexual assault, and rape, and by her father of all people.

This is not a story about Gerry Adams, nor the SF party.

Shame on any poster attempting to play political football on the back of it.

As a father of two young girls, I would repeat this claim no matter who the perpetrator happened to be related to.

She did report it to the RUC but felt they seemed more interested in Gerry Adams.

I have to say some of the media have been shameful, namely the Belfast telegraph and the daily mail. They seem delighted that this woman was horribly abused as it gives them a chance to go after Gerry Adams.

Gerrys brother admitted to him that he had abused his daughter and he did nothing about it for years. He's a lowlife too.

Hearsay or have you something concrete on this ? Did he tell anyone else or perhaps they are not so important to your angle here ?

To be clear I have no time for SF and wouldn't vote for them under any circumstances.

Couldn't believe the Belfast Telegraph when I saw it today. They like to present themselves as a middle of the road paper but every so often the mask slips and when it does, it's ugly.
They completely sidelined the story of one woman standing up to her abuser, a story that would no doubt have given courage and hope to other victims of similar abuse, in favour of taking a pot shot at Adams and grinding their ideological axe.

Hopefully other victims and survivors will see Aine's story as proof that even years after it has happened, you can still get justice.

The evidence in court was that at ameeting in Donegal he denied to Gerry that he had abused Aine.
Again this thread is about Aine and her bravery, not about her uncle or SF.

Strange that there is next to no criticism for the RUC who were more interested in recruiting a rape victim as a tout than helping her.

The whole Adams family has found itself in a horrible situation in the space of a few years Gerry found out that his father had abused a number of his younger siblings, but not all of them believed it was true. He then heard that his brother was an abuser and he took (insufficient it seems) steps to ostracize him, again with no family consensus on the allegations and he also had to act n a way to preserve the victim anonymity. Gerry then testified against his brother. It's horrific stuff altogether and I don't think anyone should be quick to judge.

Either way the victim does not deserve to have this splashed all over the papers and have her suffering used as some kind of stick to beat her uncle with. The gleeful posts by some on other forums and comment sections is disgraceful.

It's not hearsay. Gerry Adams testified in court in April this year and said his brother admitted he abused his daughter when he was out walking with his brother in 2000.

    Lies!

    ...
During today’s hearing Gerry Adams said that in 2000 his brother Liam admitted to him that he had molested Aine Adams. This happened during a “walk in the rain” in Dundalk.

What was he supposed to do about it at that stage exactly, bearing in mind that she was an adult at the time? It was up to the victim whether or not she got police involved, and last time she had tried to do that they basically ignored her complaint and pressurised her to spill the beans about her uncle instead.

What would a normal person do if your brother admitted raping and abusing his daughter:
    1. Make a complaint to the police
    2. Make a complaint to child protective services - bearing in mind the brother remarried and had another daughter
    3. Do nothing
Gerry Adams said he believed Aine's allegations against her father and they travelled to Donegal to confront Liam in 1987.

However, Gerry Adams then said he had little or no involvement with his brother Liam for the next 15 years – although Aine claimed that more could have been done to investigate her claims.

"The only present I ever received from him (Gerry Adams) was a signed copy of his autobiography, 'Before the Dawn', in 1996," she said.

"I was horrified when I opened the book and read the foreword. He had thanked all his brothers and sisters 'especially Liam'.

"I threw the book in the bin. It made me feel sick. Imagine sending the person you believed had been abused by your brother a book thanking that brother."

So... police were well aware of the complaint and decided not to act accordingly. How come you don't seem to have anything to say about that aspect of it? An entire fcuking police force decided to sit on their hands after a girl reported been raped over an extended period, and all you can focus on is whether or not Gerry Adams could have done more? Thankfully most people don't seem to be as entrenched and narrow-minded as yourself.

At the end of the day, he testified against his brother. He could not have done so if Aine had not decided to make a renewed complaint in 2006. Such a renewed complaint would not have needed to be made if the police treated it with the gravity it deserved at the time. Yourself and others are making the same mistakes as police did when the victim made her original complaint.. focussing on Gerry more so than on what happened to her.

    It's exceedingly scummy

How am I narrow-minded?? He said he believed her story in 1987, then his only contact with her for the next 15 years was to send her a book which thanked his brother the abuser. Then in 2000, when the brother admitted the abuse in 2000, he did nothing to help the daughter or prevent a further abuse taking place. Saying the police didn't do enough is irrelevant, Gerry Adams did not support his niece like a normal person would.
