Just wondering if anyone knows if these are still available anywhere (unlocked)?

As of last Friday eMobile on Patrick Street in Cork has one. They have 5 16Gb versions. All black iirc.

Would you not be up for an 5S due to release soon in Ireland ?

Dont think there's too much of a difference in them apart from cost.

ok, so it's got a fingerprint sensor which isn't important to me & a faster processor, but the 5 will already be a lot faster than my current one. an extra couple of hundred euro isn't worth it for me.

Well don't get me wrong but if you go for a upgrade, why won't you go for top of the range ?

you won't be doing that every year,i say ...

I'd be moving up from a 4, so this would be a big jump for me

The 5S won't be a couple of hundred more, max 100 if that... I expect it to be priced around the same as the 5. The 5c (which is a 5 essentially) should be cheaper than the 5 was, we'll see...
If you really want to save a few hundred euro get a used iPhone 5.
If you're upgrading I'd say the same as said, wait for the 5s (or 5c). If you're buying it sim free you can order one in the UK and get it shipped via parcel motel.

32GB & 64GB have been out of production for months at this stage so they are very hard to get I'm afraid.

To clarify, eMobile on Patrick Street have a single iPhone 5 32Gb left, as of last Friday.

My replacement 32gig iPhone 5 arrived this morning. Manufacturing date start of september, so they are not out of production a month.
