Motherboard for an i5 4670k?

    Hi,

I'm looking to purchase an i5 4670k, but to do so I will need a new motherboard. I'm not terribly familiar with motherboards and compatibility, but I have heard that the ASROCK motherboards are good, but I'm not sure which ones would be suitable for an i5 4670k. Could anyone post a few (affordable) suggestions?

    My current rig is:
    1 Terabyte Hard Disk
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
    Benq 18.5 LED Monitor
    Nvidia GeForce 2GB GTX660Ti
    AMD FX 4100 - 4 Cores - 3.6Ghz
    8GB DDR3 1333Mhz Memory
Antec 520w High Current Gamer Power Supply

    Cheers.

I've used a 4670K in 2 builds so far, one using the Asrock Extreme 3 and the other with a Asus Maximus 6 Hero, both are good boards, neither are really budget options though. How much are you looking to spend ?

I'm looking for one that would be less than €130, if possible.

D3H from Gigabyte at that price point. Solid board, UD5 construction is nice too, it really makes the board feel a step above others. I went from a Asus Z68 v-Pro to my current UD5, and couldn't believe the difference in the PCB's

Its on dabs now for €122, you may find it cheaper elsewhere, I just looked quickly

That's cool, I'll have a look into it.

Do you know of any ASROCK ones that are recommendable?

The D3H is the superior of the lot in that price range. Much more suitable for overclocking.

If you really wanted it, I guess you could go with the Asrock Extreme3. It does look a lot cheaper than the Extreme4 I built with though.

Wouldn't spend my own cash on anything but the D3H at the sub 130 price point

Yeah, the D3H seems like the best option.

    Thanks for your help, lads!

You can get that board on Amazon with free delivery for around €110.

I'd grab a decent cpu cooler to overclock the 4670k as well. A coolermaster 212 evo is a great budget option and fits most cases.

You should really look into upgrading your monitor after that. I'd imagine that 18.5 inch BenQ is an old 720p monitor. A modern 1080p 22" or 24" IPS panel will look 100 times better and can be got for a little over €100. Your pc specs with the upgraded processor will be more than capable of 1080p.

Yeah, I've actually been thinking about that. Might purchase one in the near future. Right now, getting the right motherboard is crucial because:

    A. I don't want to buy the 4670K and find out that the motherboard is useless

    B. I don't want the motherboard badly bottlenecking the GPU.

    D3H looks pretty nice though.

Different boards, the HD3 is quite a lot lower in spec than the D3H. Which eejit got the job of naming these boards anyway ? :pac:

My bad. Regardless even the cheapest z87 boards will net you good overclocks. 4670k's are low power processors and don't need much in the way of many power phases or exoctic vrm cooling to get around 4.5ghz which is about all you will get with a decent cooler.

True, the Asus 4+1/AMD 1090T fireworks shows just made me very worried about 4 phases VRM's for a while

This image shows the D3H having a lot better heat dissipation than its competition; in addition,. I think the Asrock boards were measured as having supplied more voltage than was represented via the software via the VRMs (voltmeter on the board).
