    All,

So need a bit of advice, need to sort myself out with a car within the next couple of weeks. Question is whether I should go for an 03-07 budget about 5kish or up budget to 9k and look at getting into the cheaper tax bracket? Going to look at a diesel do about 14-17k miles a year.
I have yet to drive one but recently looking at the saab 9-3. Would prefer a saloon type car maybe Passat/a4…but the saab looks a more manageable car and my partner will be driving it occasionally.

I suppose the main question first is should I go pre 08 or post 08 - any help here appreciated!

It would take many years of lower tax to make up the 4K difference in budget. Is cost the main factor?

Work out how many years you'd have to keep the car in order to make savings on the tax.
Also take into account the depreciation on the 08 car vs the 07.
If the tax rates stay the same, or go up by the same percentage, the 08 car will depreciate by a lower percentage than the 07.

Tin79 - I know yeah, the difference i think is roughly 400e a year if you look at 1.9's - if i looked at a pre 08 1.6 it would be less again.
My plan would be to keep it for 3 years if i go pre 08 and buy a newer car then. I suppose the worry is going to be higher mileage with risk of flywheel or timing belt issues that will cost a lot to remedy ie something major happening to an older car.

i know a saab could be picked up for about 4k but afraid you'd have to pump another 1500-2000 into it at some point with them. can anyone give me advice if they have been in a similiar situation or if it was them what would you do?

I can see your point in buying an older car compared to a newer one with smaller tax but I would be very wary of buying a Saab 93. They are generally not a reliable car and may end up costing you more in repairs than you bargained for. If you are buying one make sure they have a proper comprehensive service history and get it thoroughly checked out before buying. I'm not saying not to buy one ( I had one) just to do some homework on them before doing so.

CJC999 - Ya I havent driven one yet so I will test one out at the weekend and check the history on them. How are Volvos for spare parts, servicing etc the S40 maybe a consideration as well - the R design are a nice looking car - another one i must look into.
