Don't give up. I was playing terrible golf all year in my fourth year of golf, shooting rounds of 110 plus at times in July. On the 17th Aug, I was 22.4, as of yesterday and 6 rounds later I'm 15.5. It can be done.

What would you put the improvemnet in scoring down to?

I don't have an official secret, im sorry! I shot 43 off 22 and 42 off 18 on sat in a run of six rounds and got the additional Esr cut. I am keeping the ball in play, where as before I was wild with driver and losing balls. Has my ball striking improved enormously? No, but it is a less erratic. Just a bit of confidence I suppose. My personal best of 84 was shot on Saturday. Its a bit surreal and i only played one round off 18 ever, the one on Sat. I suppose the point of my post was to simply try to encourage others who are struggling. You can come out of it. I had to be very patient this summer and previous summers and I've now benefited from it. With young kids, I've no time to go to range or practice. I am a game a week man, I did work on mental side of game by listening to a Karl Morris CD. My be worth considering.

Well done - I'm going in the right direction now too, though not as dramatically as you, 22.4 to 20.1 since Sept 1. Improvement in driving and keeping it in play probably the main thing, cutting down on the disasters

to be honest in keeping the ball in play my biggest problem is from 100 yards in with pitching, chipping and putting.

am convinced that i am not hitting my wedges correctly or at least not getting the alignment/targetting right. worse still it is the short pitch shots that i am having problems with, an example is a par 5 on saturday less that 40 yards to the pin in the rough managed to shank the wedge into the greenside bunker directly across the way from where i was shooting

I've had to give it up due to crazy work commitments (PhD) but I think its nearly a good thing. I was never very good but I'll take it back up in 2 years as a "novice" and get loads of lessons. I release my wrists too wuickly during the swing and block everything hard right. The higher the club the worse it is. Its extremely demoralizing to smash every drive into the rough while also taking 100 yards or so off your maximum distance.

In April 2012 my brother was very nearly 23 handicap, he was 22.4 , He is nearly 50 now, but he was a good golfer back in his day playing off 12 and featuring the odd time.
For some strange reason he went through the horrors for about ten years, really really bad... his worst stroke comp was 147 shots about 4 yeas ago, and he would need at least 20 balls in his bag as his drives could go anywhere. It would have been easy for him to pack it in as it was getting very frustrating and embarrasing. Anyway he turned it around, without lessons, he found himself a driver that suits him, he hits a strong fade on on his drives .. and hits fairway 80% of the time.. and he mainly uses woods..7 wood , 11 wood, and a 7 iron off the green but now he is confidently using a wedge again for the first time in years.

In one year he has come from nearly 23 down to 12... he has won Golfer of the year...and won back to back to medals..and went a good distance in the club premier match play competition, he will also be representing the club in the All Ireland Medal competition in ballybunion.

I put it down to .
He got a small putting tip off a guy a few months ago, that has saved him so many shots, A driver that suited him..not fitted just picked it up second hand, but most of all ..he never gave up- the persistence to keep going.
