Could someone give me a Dummies Guide to making a Strava Segment from a Garmin 500. It would be ideal if I could convert a Garmin 'lap' into a segment.

I presume you've uploaded from the Garmin to Strava? When you have, just go to the actions tab under the ride details. This will give you a drop down menu. Select 'New Segment' and from there adjust the sliders to select your segment.

When you're making segments it is a good habit to clearly define the start and end point, and try not to duplicate segments which have already been created.

You can also create a segement from another person's ride.

+1 - zoom in to define it.

Annoying when a segment is created which just ends past a junction/bridge/landmark etc.

If you have installed Garmin Training Center* you can also export individual laps that you've marked off on an actual ride and import them into Strava. (I haven't done this myself for a long time and was coincidentally thinking of trying to do it again, so will have to remind myself of the details)

*I don't know if its still available - I think they were discontinuing support for it(?))

Thanks. I've imported a file manually and made the segment as you've described.
But, when I import other rides that include that 'segment', should the segment show up automatically on the new ride?

The segment should show up in other rides, but it may not do it straightaway for older rides. I have found that sometimes it can take a while for previous rides to be updated with newer segments. It should appear on new rides (rides done after the segment was created) straight away tho.

Strava appears to be acting a bit strangely lately regarding segments. A few posters here have mentioned creating segments on busy routes only to find that the segment has been ridden once by one person with no other cyclists added over time.

Thanks, I have it sorted now. I wanted to compare my own times for training and have found 'my results'. I don't find the the package very intuitive I must say - it will probably take a little time like everything else.
