I'm sure you've all heard well by now of a 65 year old woman with Alzheimers that disappeared last Tuesday.

Well, apparently, she's been found dead in Ballymun, by Aldi... with her dog standing by her body.

    LINK

Chances are she fell asleep and succumed to the cold while hungry and/or dehydrated?

An incredibly sad way to go :(

But I really got to ask - pictures of her have been all over the place this week, how was it that no one has even noticed her ?

It's not cold enough to die from the cold must be more to it.

Lack of food, and I'd imagine especially lack of water, especially with all the walking.

    Very sad. :(

I am so sad to hear that she was found dead, the whole country was rooting for her to be found safe, my heart goes out to her family and friends. She will be in my prayers. rest in peace lovely lady.

lack of shelter kills people far quicker than lack of water, for a 65 year old to be in the outdoors for that period could easily be fatal. Its a terribly sad set of circumstances.

Personally I think people are beoming more self-involved and dont give two f**ks.
It's sad. Lets be honest there has been alot of media attention around her disappearance. But if people dont give two f**s about the story, they arent going to remember her face .... heck, perhaps to even help an ol lady who seems lost.

    Sad :(

    Sad :(

I think the public response to this story and the amount of people who gave up hours/days of their time to search for a complete stranger shows that there are plenty out there who absolutely DO care about others. It's one positive thing to come out of the whole story.

    Sad :(

I don't think that's fair. The simple fact is she wasn't seen by somebody who knew to stop her. She was a moving person after all. Sightings were recorded and there were lots of people looking who cared, strangers giving up their free time.

Just because more didn't join in does not mean they did not care about this lady and her family.

Did you go volunteer? And if not, does that mean you yourself are too self involved and don't give two fükcs?

Absolutely..over a hundred people in finglas gave up thier saturday evening to take part in various searches of the area for the old woman.

Sadly she wasnt found alive but the response to her plight was enough to restore faith in human nature.

I am not gonna argue with you about those with good hearts who helped :) Good bloody on them.
But lets be realistic on the other side of the coin. An eldery woman died near an aldi in a built up area. An eldery woman who was seen over the last week in the media.

You have to look at both the positive and negative and then call things. Not just focusing on one side. Rose tint glasses and all that.
I mean forget about the media attention. You surely would think, perhaps hope :( , that your average person would stop and make sure that an elderly person who seems to not know where she is was safe and to help her.

What exactly does an elderly person who seems to not know where she is look like? Or should I just stop everyone older than me to be sure?

    FUC*ING HELL!!!!!!

Be respectful dude. She had Alzheimers. Did you not read her story? do you not know what Alzheimers is? do you not know the horrific symptoms of this disease?

Sounds like you just saw my post, knew f**k all about the story, but proceed to have your input.

I'm fully aware of what Alzheimers is but that not to say she was wondering around in a confused and disorientated state or at least in a confused and disorientated state to the passer by

I've known people who knew me one day and not the next. I've known people who've known where they hide the post office book one day and not know where they live they live the next. I've known people wish for the those they know and loved and who no longer know their own kids slip of this mortal relam as a gentle release rather than the person who doesn't know the person who holds their hand.

    Exactly.
Now imagine a woman with it going missing for 4 days. You really think she would have zero contact with people as she wandered the streets? Not knowing who she was, who passers by were.

Thats my point. My only point. It isnt logical. But in any case it's sad tho :(

I never said zero contact. I said what does a person such as her look like? A 60 something walking her dog isn't unusual. There are no outward signs she needs help

My aunt has Alzheimer's and got lost walking the dog one day when she was in the earlier stages of the illness. Luckily a neighbour spotted her so nothing bad happened to her. But it could so easily have ended like this. I'm sure she'd have walked and walked without quite knowing where she was going. If you'd stopped and talked to her she'd have seemed a bit "off" but if you saw her walking about you'd not have noticed anything out of the ordinary.

You're the one who isn't being respectful. Loads of people gave up their time to search for Peggy. I think it's tacky and mean to say people were selfish (what did YOU do to help btw?)

I don't know what you expect someone with Alzheimers to look like, but most of the time you wouldn't know from looking at the person. Look at the CCTV provided by the guards. A woman walking her dog, all very normal.

No outward signs? dude, its behaviour.
Do you really think in the 4 days that she was missing she did not have an incident of, well lets be respectful here, memory loss or confusion?

That she didnt approach some random stranger in that time? Or be it in a shop? etc etc etc.

Did you just originally quote me thinking "well, how could someone tell by looking" - but totally forgetting about other things?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 959 ✭✭✭maringo

So sorry she wasn't found earlier. I was hoping she would be found and returned to her family safe. Deepest sympathy to the family.

My entire point is she could of suffered memory loss or confusion for the 4 days without any outward signs. Yes it entirely possible she didn't approach a stranger in the 4 days. No I read the entire thread and you're wrong no matter if I just read your post or the entire thread. The sad fact remains it's entirely possible for her to look like just a other person waking the dog

This story is sad enough without having to read this crap aswell, just drop it ffs.

Condolences to her family, it really is a tragedy, poor woman.

My guess is that she mainly walked and walked and walked with the dog. Until she ended up in that field. Which she may have been in for quite a while. I doubt she was wandering around for all of those days she was missing. There's every chance that she never spoke to anyone after she left the Mrs Browns boys set.

It's all very very sad. I really feel for her family now. Poor Peggy can't suffer any more but they've got to pick up the pieces from this heart breaking tragedy.

    I agree.

If truth be told, I wonder how many people saw her in some sort of disheveled state, or raving, and turned the other way before they could even think about a missing person.

People with Alzheimers aren't raving or dishevelled at best( for lack of a better word) they'll look or be confused.

Or will you turn around and say because I said X Y Z (even tho I admitted i was in the wrong) - that some how I am a jerk for not helping, whilst you are not for not helping?

No one would have known, she probably was just walking around with her dog and appeared as a normal person.

If you didn't know her you wouldn't be able to tell. It's why Alzheimer's is such a scary desiese, it robs your identity silently.

My dad's lady had it. She was the most beautiful, kindest lady I ever knew and it robbed not just her but her whole family and friends.

Alzimers is not fatal, you just don't go off for 4 days and forget to hydrate. It's still mild enough to sleep outdoors, I don't believe it was the cold that killed her or lack or water.
I'd say more likely, stroke, heart attack etc but not the cold or lack of water.

I don't believe a lot of people her have first hand experience of Alzimers and how it affects you.

Poor Casper remained by her body until she was found. He passed away a few short hours after they were located.

Tragic, really sad and we seem to have a new sticky with someone or multiple people missing every week. Each one is potentially a family destroyed.

Its so sad that the dog stood guard for so long and held on as best it could.

Loyal to & beyond the end.

My deepest condolences to her family

What does it matter what I did? I'm not the one criticising 'people' for being selfish and not making an effort to find this woman. What I did or didn't do has absolutely nothing to do with my point, which is that it's tacky to nitpick and try to pin blame on random strangers when a tragedy like this happens.

If you're complaining about people not helping and didn't put 100% into it yourself, you're being a hypocrite. Even if you did spend 4 days helping, it doesn't give you the right to cast judgement on others and make statements and assumptions you have no way of backing up.
