I've searched, and can't seem to find thread already started about this.... please merge/delete if there is one.

This guy is a pal of my sister's, and has been missing since Thursday. There was such a huge, overwhelming response to the awful, tragic in the end, appeal for Peggy Mangan, that I thought I'd post this in the hope of spreading the word.

It is believed he then went to the Ballsbridge area of the city.

When last seen he was wearing a charcoal-grey jumper, brown trousers and brown shoes.

<My first reaction is "jeez, not another">

Was exactly my reaction as well when I saw the headline. I didn't realise then that I'd actually met him.

Hoping against hope that he's ok, can't imagine how his family must be feeling.

Really hope there's a better end to this one.

Is there anything extraordinary to be looking out for OP? As in behaviour? Could it be sickness or a breakdown?

I honestly don't know - I met him once a good while ago. I haven't talked properly to my sister yet, she just asked me to get it out there so I put it up in a post. There seems to be very little media coverage about it - and admittedly he's not as vulnerable in terms of age or illness (that I know of) as the other recent case.

Still, his family must be tortured until they find him.

Which I hope they do, soon.

If I hear any further useful information I'll post it up.

So many people gone missing in the last week. I know this thread is about Gerry but with all the attention on poor Peggy Mangan (R.I.P.) another man also lost his life this week too, Terry Coleman from Clondalkin.

Hopefully the outcome is different for Gerry.

His wife was on the Anton Savage show on Today FM this morning. The show will most likely be podcast, so folks can listen there to hear more on what he looks like etc.

His wife mentioned a sighting, which they think might be him, on the DART.

Hope that he gets found safe and sound.

I know Gerry a little bit and his friends are very keen to spread the word. It would help a lot if you all would post the RTE link with his pic to your facebook or twitter pages.

What is with all the missing people lately?

People have always gone missing, but it's only recently that there are an increase in social media appeals for assistance.

    It's called a perception bias.

I think there is a particularly visible campaign around Gerry McCann. There have been posters going up all over south Dublin/ Bay area as well, in the last couple of days, you can't miss them.

Can anyone clarify where Gerry is from please? I read on a FB page that he's from Baldoyle but on the news they said he was from Dundalk and might be heading that way. Just might make search easier if we knew a bit more. thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 195 ✭✭grazer

Gerry and his wife and children live in Baldoyle - have done for the past 7 or 8 years, but he's originally from Dundalk and has family there.
He went missing from Stillorgan on Thursday morning. As Andrea his wife says, he's a funny, charming and really engaging guy.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/pat-shortt-appeals-for-help-over-missing-actor-gerry-mccann-1.1544854

"Comedian Pat Shortt has appealed for the public’s help in tracing actor Gerry McCann who went missing last Thursday.
It was “ very much out of character” for Mr McCann (47) not to be in touch with his family and they were “very concerned at this stage”, Shortt said.
The actor was being treated for anxiety and went missing from St John of God’s hospital in Stillorgan last Thursday.

Public help sought in tracing Dublin man
Speaking on RTÉ Radio today, Shortt described him as a “a soft natured man, very approachable” and urged anyone who saw him to “go up and talk to him and try to contact the gardaí”.
The missing man has “fair short spiky hair, a little bit of weight on and a very soft-natured face”, Shortt said. Members of the public may recognise him from the film Life’s a Breeze, where he appeared in a dole office scene with Shortt or from past appearances in Fair City, he said.
Mr McCann is described as being about 175cm (5’ 9”) tall, of medium build with blonde to grey hair. He was wearing charcoal grey jumper, brown trousers and brown shoes when last seen. He was last seen in Stillorgan at 10am on Thursday. It is believed that he then went to the Ballsbridge area.
His wife Andrea McCann said it was “very unusual” not to hear from him as they would normally talk to or text each other several times per day. He does not have his wallet or access to money, she told Today FM radio yesterday.
Two people had seen a man matching his description on the Dart from Blackrock towards Pearse Street and speaking to some American tourists, she said.
“He is a very gentle friendly charming man and very engaging and funny ......he has been very stressed,” she said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Blackrock Garda station at 01-6665200, the Garda confidential line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

His wife was just on the Joe Duffy show there appealing to anybody that meets him, to stop and talk to him as he loves people and is friendly. Call the guards at the same time if possible. Gerry has been suffering with anxiety lately but seemingly had a handle on it. His wife went on to say it is totally out of character for him to not contact his family

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 195 ✭✭grazer

It's worth having a look at the facebook page, as there are photos of him with a beard ... he may not have shaved since Thursday.
He's a lovely, funny guy - if you see him get chatting to him and try to call the guards. He has two gorgeous kids and he really is a family man - which is why all this is so out of character. He was suffering from anxiety had sought treatment for it. Please do watch out for him wherever you are.

    http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/wife-of-missing-actor-gerry-mccann-makes-emotional-appeal-for-his-return-29621678.html
    30 SEPTEMBER 2013

The wife of missing man Gerry McCann has made an emotional plea for information on her husband’s whereabouts.

Andrea McCann said it was very out of character for her “friendly, chatty” husband to be out of contact with his family for so long.

“He is a very gentle and friendly man,” Andrea told Joe Duffy on Liveline.

“The way he is, you wouldn’t know he was suffering with anxiety. He enjoys people’s company.”

“If people see him, say hello and go up for a chat and he will hold on. Please don’t let him walk off. He is very engaging.”

She said she cannot be sure of the state her husband is in now after several days without a change of clothes or shower but said people do recognise him on the street from his acting career.

“He still gets recognised from his role as a carer in Fair City and he was one of the main family members in the film ‘Life’s A Breeze’,” she said.

“He has lost about four stone in the last year, he’s been exercising but he’s still gets stopped in the street.”

Gerry admitted himself to hospital as he was suffering from anxiety and stress. He was said to be handling his anxiety well and was in control of the situation.

“In this last year he’s been very busy and he’s been good at looking after himself,” she said. “He was aware of his anxiety and that’s the reason he wanted to go to the hospital to get help.

“This is totally out of the blue, he has never done anything like this before.”

Andrea said the last time she saw her husband was Wednesday night. The last she heard from him was a text message she received on the Thursday morning. His phone ran out of battery at 11am.

“He has nothing with him,” Andrea said.

“He had no transport, very little money, at the most twelve euro. He was smoking again so he had a packet of cigarettes with him.

“He was wearing a dark, grey coloured jumper, brown tanned trousers and brown boots.

“Just please keep an eye out around the Dublin area.”

The mum-of-two said they received information on two sightings of Gerry on the Dart train Sunday, but CCTV hasn’t confirmed the sightings of her husband.

“Everyone is doing fantastic work at the moment with posters and everything,” she said.

“But, unfortunately, we have nothing concrete.”

Andrea said above all Gerry is a family man.

“He is a friendly guy and a family man,” an emotional Andrea said.

“We have two young children, they’re five and six.

“We do everything as a family. This is very unusual for him to do something like this.”

Gardai are urging anyone with information to contact Blackrock garda station on 01 6665200, the garda confidential line on 1800 666111 or any garda station.

Mr McCann is described as approximately 5ft 9in tall, with greyish blonde hair. He was last seen wearing a charcoal grey jumper, brown trousers and brown shoes.

    02 OCTOBER 2013

A SISTER of the actor Gerry McCann has confirmed that the body found on a Dublin beach yesterday was him.

Mr McCann’s body was discovered at around 11.20am yesterday on Dollymount Strand.

Helene O’Cleary thanked the public for their assistance with the search for Mr McCann over the last week.

“We want to thank everyone. People are so good. We hear about all the bad but people are just amazing are so, so good.” She told Joe Duffy on Liveline.

“I feel him with me now, it’s a much strange thing, I feel like I’m holding him in my arms.

“He was just wonderful, I never met anybody like him.”

She said that the body was found on the beach yesterday, adding “he’s gone to heaven now”.

The actor, who has starred in Fair city and several other RTE dramas, was reported missing last week.

His friend, actor Pat Shortt, made an emotional appeal last week for him to make contact with his family - and was singled out for praise by Gerry’s sister.

“I want to thank Pat Shortt, he was particularly good”, Ms O’Cleary said.

The actor was being treated for anxiety and went missing from the St John of God Hospital in Stillorgan last Thursday.

His wife Andrea last week said that the actor was aware he was suffering from anxiety and actively sought help.

“In this last year he’s been very busy and he’s been good at looking after himself,” she said.

“He was aware of his anxiety and that’s the reason he wanted to go to the hospital to get help.”
