I bought a second hand car today which has "Taxi" tax (PSV Tax i think...). The tax is til the end of next June. Do I have to re-tax the car or can I use the current tax til it expires?

    Thanks.

Your vehicle is probably taxed under one of below categories:
    (b) any vehicle (excluding a taxi) which is used as a small public service vehicle within the meaning of the Road Traffic Act 1961 and for no other purpose,

    €95

    (c) any vehicle which is fitted with a taximeter and is lawfully used as a street service vehicle within the meaning of the Road Traffic Act 1961 and for purposes incidental to such use and for no other purpose

    €95,

What's in bold should answer your question.

Just as I taught. Also, would I get any of my car tax back due to the fact that theres 95€ already been paid off of it?

See I can't remember anyone here asking about changing tax class during a period vehicles is taxed.
I have no clue what the answer is, but logical seems to be that you should only pay the difference in tax price (between current and new), not the whole price of new private tax.

Also hence that I only quoted the law.
If it was me, I probably wouldn't bother doing anything with in until current tax expires.

I had an ex-Taxi a couple of years ago with about 6 months PSV tax left on it, I kept that disc in and just taxed it as normal when the PSV tax expired.
Had been through a few Garda checkpoints in that time and I never got any hassle over it so I wouldn't worry about it.

Wouldn't they be able to see that I dont have a taxi licence and during the change of ownership or the next tax renewal be liable for arrears?

Unless things have changed in the last two years then no, as I said earlier when the PSV tax expired on my old car I just got a pin number online as usual and was then able to tax it from the time the PSV tax was up.

I know that in order to get PSV tax you need to physically go into the tax office with your PSV licence as proof and then the car is taxed on the system .Since it's an automated system for everyone else I'm guessing that the automated system doesn't differentiate between PSV or private tax, so when you go to tax your car online as far as their system is concerned the car has already been taxed as normal.

    If that makes sense :p
