Look into a program called Trainerroad. Its awesome.

Has will allow you to train with power and has training programs for you to follow. Used it last year and looking forward to starting into it again this week.

I started to use indoor interval cycling app and I find it good. Set up a few settings and away you go. Does countdown for different intervals.

I have Indoor Cycling Coach Lite. It's pretty good for a free one, but just ignore the warm-down sections, they're much too long. Do long hard effort when it says warm down and then do your own warmdown instead.

TrainerRoad plus Sufferfest (TrainerRoad presents you with on-screen goals that match Sufferfest, and other, workout videos), for the most painful and rewarding of both worlds.

Well, living out in the country, light plays a big part, dark when leaving for work and dark when coming home ...

It just isnt safe to be on these roads in the dark, even with good lights

Nothing wrong with open roads, I certainly prefer them myself, but turbo training gives you the means of doing very specific training without variable external influences like weather, terrain, etc. For some people, or for some types of training, that's very valuable. Each to their own.
