    Hey guys,
looking into getting this done, sick of glasses and contacts and my terrible eyesight :P I live in Galway and would love any recommendations, will travel to Dublin though. Also I am a college student so should I wait until I am on holidays to do it as I do not want to have blurry vision in class!

    Tia

I got mine done, they were able to correct a astigmatism in both my eyes.

    Best thing I've ever done.

I had lasek with intralaise I think, was up and about in 24 hours and now I can rub my eyes whenever I want. It was relatively painless to, a bit if stinging the night of but fine the next day.

I would fully recommend it as over the course of the next 10 years it will cost you way more in eye tests and glasses and lenses.

I went with vision express, not as comfy as some of the hospitals but half the price. I think they have a surgery in Galway. They were professional and very accommodating.

I am 24 and my spectacle prescription is sphere r:-5.75 l:-2.00 cyl r:-1.00 l:-4.75 if that means anything! I also have the astigmatism in my left eye!

go get a free consultation in vision express. that means nothing.

you could have other conditions with your eye such as a thin cornea which may make it impossible to correct.

I'd recommend it. I'd put it off for years and when I finally got round to doing it, I was like that's it, that's what I've been putting off! About half an hour of discomfort, nothing you could call pain, followed by a few days of dryness and that was pretty much that.
I had terrible eyesight, had to feel around for my glasses or contacts in the morning, and whereas i'm still not 20/20, (one eye has a slight bit of blurring particularly car lights at night, but not enough to be a problem) I can function perfectly without glasses. It's one of lifes little joys to just be able to open your eyes and see clearly in the morning!

best thing I ever did. Been wearing glasses since 7 and lenses since 13 - now 40, got it done two years ago and now from a prescription of -6/7 am better than 20/20. Bit of dry eye but no more than mild discomfort for a few hours, able to drive next day. Loved renewing my driving licence when I could get the 'must wear corrective lenses' taken off it. Surgeon said important to get done before 40.

I'm too young to get it done anyway but how long does it last? I mean does it wear off after 5/10 years?

The surgery removes a thin layer from your cornea - obviously this never wears off.
What happens in some cases is that the eye continues to regress and so the person becomes short-sighted again. However, the same further regression would have happened whether they had the surgery or not.

I've been looking into this lately here in Galway too and I think the only two places to get it done in Galway are with Optilase and in the Galway clinic. The Galway clinic does work out the more expensive but not by much and to be honest this wouldn't be a deciding factor for me when choosing one of these places.

I'm leaning towards getting it done in the clinic and that's only because of a recommendation from someone at work but would like to hear from more who got it done here in Galway too.

Would also like to try to get it done before the end of the year just incase the tax relief is removed in the next budget.

I'd love to get this done. Just freaked out by the idea of my eyes being clamped and someone working on my eye-ball. Strange really, have broken loads of bones had numerous operations that I wouldn't have thought twice about, but for some reason I have a mental block about someone going to work on my eyes!!

Just to add to this conversation that there are different types of treatment. Lasik, Lasek and Wavefront. The basic treatment is Lasik and seems to suit most people. I am also considering this. There is currently an offer of €300 off treatment at Optical Express.

Wavefront just refers to a more accurate way of mapping the eye. It is not a separate category of eye surgery like Lasik and Lasek. You can have, and probably should have, wavefront lasik or wavefront lasek.

Would appear to be a substantial difference in price with Wavefront. Wonder is it really worth the extra money? Anyone here had it done?

The place I went to don't even give you the option of not having it. It's just taken for granted now. It's biggest advantage is reducing/eliminating night vision issues.
You've been quite a while thinking about this Gingko.

I had wavefront lasek with intralaise.

paid about 3600 for it two years ago, best thing ever.

was back up and in work 36 hours later. I can rub my eyes too!

Yes I have for obvious reasons as it is about my eyes after all! And there are endless conflicting stories. I don't necessarily buy into all the fear either! I do know of three people that had Lasik with no Wavefront done more then 10 years ago and no problems to report

    Hi Ginko,
Sorrydidn't see your query before. I had mine done in September by Optical Express in Cork under surgeon Conall Hurley (Wavefront Lasik). My results have been very disappointing - May have an 'Enhancement' done in a couple of months but they have to wait for everyting to settle down. The biggest problem at the moment is glare (I have been given temporary glasses to correct distance) - Originally I thought that if it were an issue it would be just headlights at night, but every light (bulbs, street lights, traffic lights, led etc) are hazy so I don't like the evinings at the moment. This may improve (and I hope it will) but no one told me it would make daily living so difficult).
Anyway regarding whether or not Wavefront worth it: Give yourself every chance to get it right! If I had choosen the cheaper option I would be blaming it for my outcome but at least I know I didn't cut any corners.
Laser eye surgery is very successful for the vast majority but as I have found to my cost, it has risks that are not simple to fix - It's not like Teeth Whitening athough they sell it as if I were that straight forward.

    Good Luck
