Getting the Shift

I remember when I was in my late teens that a lot of my friends used to enjoy kissing somebody on a night out just for the sake of it. They knew it was leading nowhere, there would be no 'coitus' and they probably wouldn't even talk to the person again but they still done it.

It's something I never understood. I'd rather hang out with my friends or chat up a girl I was actually interested in instead of slobbering onto someone just to 'get the shift'. Although, I don't really like kissing (especially in public) unless I like the person so maybe I'm just weird and different.

I'm not condemning people for doing it, each to their own, just wondering what all the fuss is (was) about? Do you do this?

Late teens??? Why weren't you and your mates trying to get the ride??

Myself and my mates would try and get the shift at the disco when we were 12-15 years old. Bit of slagging about it then if someone didn't "get the shift" or if someone pulled a minger, pretty much the same slagging as we do now really, all good fun.

Try meeting more new people. Many out there that don't have galloping halitosis.

That's why I found it odd. None of us were virgins. I'd only have been interested in the roooide, no interest in kissing. Maybe they were still in the 12-15 year old mindset :/ I don't hang out with any of them anymore...wonder if they still do it?

Well if I've no interest in the girl then kissing is pretty boring to me. I don't care how hot she is, kissing is boring if there's no connection.

Exploring? I'd argue it's the total opposite. You're in the one spot with your eyes closed (unless you're a weirdo who kisses with their eyes open :p ) You're doing zero exploring...

It's just kids growing up in this society IMO. It's gotten really bad though they rate each other publicly on Facebook now, it's madness.

Also, at 12-14 back in the day it was just kissing, now it's blowies being dished out at the drop of a hat.

I have rarely kissed someone in a nightclub. It's weird. Even in a secluded corner I'd be uncomfortable. I tended to 'explore' when I knew there was nobody watching us, so basically in the privacy of a bedroom...

Do you pal around with a lot of 12 to 14 year olds and know it has become more common first hand?

Or do you just enjoy sensational Indo articles?

Hardcore porn films and mags have been accessible to Irish youth since at least the 70's. The only difference now is that rather than watch and read the same two or three mags and videos you owned they can watch more new ones. Porn is certainly easier to obtain but it is not like teenagers pre 2000 were not able to access them at all. Which is why I would be skeptical as to these articles that say porn is causing all manner of underage stuff that never used to happen. Fair enough it is easier these days to obtain more extreme stuff, but if someone psychologically has it in them to shag their pet dog I'm sure their brain would have got there without porn anyway.

If its Girls then it would be normal. They don't want to get all dolled up and then get no male attention/affection for the night. A cheeky shift is the perfect way to get a bit of action they crave without having a one night stand and being seen as a slut.

If its lads, there's something wrong there

No I have a big family and between my own and my gfs and friends etc there a good few lads and lassies of that age who are all very active in the kissing activities and the like for their age. From all parts of the country.

I don't read the indo or any other broadsheets, only the odd copy of the Herald.

Same here, although not because its weird, but I've never been able to form a decent conversation over the loud repetitive music for it to get to that stage. I know what you mean about the shifting or the sake of shifting though. It's the same with the riding for the sake of riding - some guys will just get up on anything.

    I'm the same.

I dodge the shift more than I get it.

Mates say that it gives them an ego boost on a night out even if they know it's going anywhere. It does nothing for me except waste valuable banter time if I'm not actually into the girl. If I think I can get the ride out of it then I give it a shot but otherwise: meh.

Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

I still go out to get the shift.

Well ironed Ben Sherman shirt, pair of straight leg Wrangler jeans, Caterpillar boots. A quick splash of Adidas Sport on the neck and I'm set. Down to Copper's to get the shift off a nurse from Tipperary.

Why does anyone need to go out to get it?

Doesn't everyone tongue-wrestle with their casual friends?

    Exploring with tongue...and fingers ;)

    Then fists with 40+ women.
