Work Experience

    Hi,

I am currently doing a business studies course in college and I'm required to find work experience for 1 day a week (Friday) for the year. After about 2 weeks of scouring the internet and sending out copious emails and phoning many places I've still had no luck and can't come up with any other business to try.

I'm living in Dublin and wondering if anyone has recommendations on where to try? I've mostly tried HQ's and accounting firms.

I asked, but she wants to give it a few weeks for us to find it to simulate finding a real job.

    Stupid, I know. :p

Forget sending emails and cold calls to people you don't know. Hopeless.

Think about who you, or your family or friends, knows who works at a place that might have suitable work expereince for you.

    Ask those people:
    1) Does their workplace do that sort of thing?
    2) Who should you talk to about getting taken on for it? And - most importantly
    3) Will they introduce you to that person, or at least forward a recommendation.

Only resort to email/phone after you've got some agreements at step 3 - and make sure your communications a personal.

If you don't know where your family/friends work or what they do - then start by asking them that!

Extra for experts: set up yourself a profile on LinkedIn. Connect to people you know through voluntary work, study, sports, hobbiies etc. See who they know, too. You can find out an amazing amount on LinkedIn once you get a few connections going.

Try some of the top 20 accountancy firms in Dublin. They always seem to be taking on people for experience. Try Grant Thornton, Mazers, or Hughes Blake any around there size of firms and you might have a chance. Try get to speak to a partner or manager if possible and do your homework on them and show you have an interest in their firm. This will show some initiative.

Try a jobbridge or voluntary job like charity shop or something to do with a business if all else fails. Do you have to report on it?

I've a few places lined up if all else fails, I'd just prefer somewhere that will help me down the line! Yeah we have to fill out a diary on what we did every day haha
