Hi, a Google search seemed to show that any 500 barrel will fit the 88.
I would ring round as many gun shops as possible, and see what they have. You could easily come across one left in for disposal, and hopefully get a barrel for yours. I had a "New Haven" model, which seemed to be a budget model made for a chain store or something, and traded it in against a new 500 a few years ago. They are practically worthless secondhand, you won't get €100 as a trade-in. I think the dealer saved the trigger and the safety and scrapped the rest.

forgot to add , the serial number is on the receiver, nothing on the barrel, unlike with a break-open shotgun, so you should have no problem getting a second barrel or swapping for a shorter one. Any dealer will clarify the legal position on this.

thanks for reply iver the barrel i have is worth alot more than the shorter one few people said a gunsmith could cut it for me but that jus seems to be ruinin a valuable barrel id rada have two one for field and one for clay.im gonna ask round few gunsmiths thanks for your help.

Absolutely do NOT get it cut, unless you want a Skeet gun.

I'm just going to make an assumption based on my own experience. Do you only have the maverick a short while or have little use on it ?
I began to hone my shot gun skills on o/u's but fell for the charms of semi's and eventually bought one. It took me a while to get used to the 'length' of the semi but after a good few hundred shells through it my shooting has greatly improved and I am shooting better than I ever did with previous break action guns.
    Persevere with it.

By the way Baikels tend to have shorter length of pulls, so making them nice and compact, quicker to mount and generally feel much shorter than other guns especially semi's and pumps.

you don't mention it, but has your barrel got screw in choke tubes? and "custom " porting (as Mossberg call it) You should try and get a barrel with the choke tubes at least. Hard to know of the porting works or not! I have a catalogue came with my gun somewhere, must look it up and see what was available then.

Looked at second hand and new barrels before and even if you get a good deal the postage etc did not make it economical. Cheaper buying an another gun. :(

to be honest wouldnt really worry about the price was thinkning about just buying a different gun but thats allowed of hassle having to take out new licence etc.

If you cannot get a barrel in 25 or 26 inch length, you could get another standard one like you already have, and get a gun smith to cut it behind the porting holes, just at the 3rd ventilated rib support, and machine the barrel to take the choke tubes.

300 quid just to have about 3" less barrel. Thats steep man. I have a 28" barrel remington 870 and while I would like a shorter barrel, for the sake of 3-4", the price just isnt worth it.

update guys sourced a 24 inch barrel from local dealer for 60 euro the problem is its silver anything i can do about this???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,242 ✭✭✭iverjohnston

    That's a much better price!
You can get Browning kits to re-brown old barrels, depends what kind of finish yours has. Or you can get camo spray kits also.
I have a book listing the history of Mossberg if your interested in a loan for a read, by the way.
