Bought a second hand desktop last september for college. Long story short, its dead now.

Debating whether its better to buy a desktop outright or build one. I am presuming ill get slightly more for my money if I build one?

    1. What is your budget? €400

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? College, internet, music production.

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes. Happy to go with windows 7 if it saves me a few bob.

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

    5. Do you need a monitor? No]

5a. If yes, what size do you need. [19'/20'/22'/24'/etc.]

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1920x1080/No]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? just a mouse

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? No. Should I?

    8. How can you pay? [Bank Transfer/Credit Card]

    9. When are you purchasing? next 2/3 weeks

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? East Cork, but i'm optimistic ill succeed

Buying a machine at that price means you'll get roughly the same as building but you'll get poorer generic components. You upgrade ability will also be more limited.

Windows 7 v Windows 8 - pretty much the same price, but there are student deals available. I hate Windoes 8 on my 'proper PC' but its grand for my tablet and HTPC, and even my VM.

Overclocking is free performance, at this price segment it's possibly not an option however.

Sorry no build, it'll be a while before I do them again.
