Stalling on job offer?

    Hi,

I've been out of work for a couple of months but been doing some interviews recently and today received a job offer. The company wants me to get back to them within 24 hours with a response.

The thing is I am waiting to hear back about two other jobs I interviewed for recently, one of which I really want. It pays less but I think is a much better career option.

I phoned the company today that I really want to work for to ask if there was any update or feedback as it had been a few weeks since I interviewed and I hadn't heard anything. They told me the interviews finished earlier this week and there should be feedback or an update tomorrow or Monday. This was before I received the job offer from the other company.

I'm not sure what to do. I don't feel like I can stall the company who made me the offer as I think if I ask for more time it will seem obvious that I am waiting on something better and I think that will look bad.

The company that made the offer today has not sent me a contract yet. The offer was made via phone then followed up by email, but it's subject to my references being checked and a medical check being successfully completed.

The preferred company may not even offer me the job, but if they do, I know I will want to accept it and I'm concerned what might happen if I accept the offer that came through today and then I turn around and say actually I have to reject it.

    Any advice?

Take the job. It buys you time until you receive the contract.

Then advise the other company of this offer- But don't hold out for them unnecessarily.

I would take the offer from them for the moment. As you said yourself, the job is subject to reference checks and medical. While these things are normally formalities, you'd never know what could happen. As sky2424 mentioned, it will also buy you a bit of time to see if other, more attractive offers come your way.

Thanks for the replies. I will accept the offer later today and see what happens with the other roles.
