    RTE
Concerns have been raised over an incident in which both pilots on a UK-operated Airbus passenger plane were asleep at the same time, with the aircraft flying on autopilot.
One of the pilots indicated in a report to the UK's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) that the pair nodded off after both had only five hours of sleep in the previous two nights.

"Concerns" - is this not a bit more than concerning?

It has happened quite alot in the states. And I'd agree with you, more than "concerning."

    A timely disclosure of information.

Incident occurred on the 13 th August. MEPs are voting on proposals to increase the Flight Time Limitations for aircrew next week.

Sure isn't that what autopilot is for? :pac:

I can't quite understand how legislation can be allowed to possibly increase the margin for error, for an occupation where the safety of people is the number one priority.

I am open to correction , but I believe the CAA actually encourages ' power naps ' on long flights . ( one at a time of course )

There was the case of the JAL ( I think ) 747 missing SFO a good few years ago , flying about 150miles out to sea then turning back , and the theory pilots were asleep, I imagine post 9-11 they would have been shot down :)

I was good friends with a pilot , he was FO for a large airline , he recalled one time he was reading a book halfway across the atlantic in a 767, looked over and the captain was asleep...... realised no one was actually paying attention.

Controlled rest is the technical term. Power naps have been scientifically proven to be beneficial to flight crew. Lots of checks and balances in when and how it is taken. All covered in the respective airlines Ops Manuals and approved by the relevant authority eg: CAA/IAA etc.

Wish I could sleep on a long haul flight :( I'm jealous! Though I guess they have a bit more legroom then me.

On a serious note, the legislation being increased in the favour of MORE duty time for pilots is crazy, human beings need sleep for gods sake.

What I find astonishing is nobody has asked the question as to what or who woke them up? At least the Auto-pilot was taking care of business...

Having said that, were I to indulge in a bit of trolling, wouldn't this be an argument for banning the auto-pilot as a plane falling to the ground would be an incentive not to sleep?
