Choosing your competition entries

Just a quick question for club members , do you shoot different shots for your club entries ? Had my first entries marked last night , but noticed that in all categories , the higher scoring shots were outside the box type of shots . Not the type you would frame and put on the wall . Judge came across as a bit arty farty . Whilst many shots were technically perfect and well composed , they generally only got 10 to 12
Just wondering if the judge was a typical judge ?

    Thanks

Judging photos is a very personal matter for the judge. Yes they will mark the technical side but depending on the judges taste, they may well go for "outside the box" shots. Each judge will have different likes and will mark and critique differently. Don't be too off put by your first night or the fact that particular judge seemed "arty farty".

In fairness, he did state before any marks were given out that his marking were very much based on his personal taste. For the record got two 10's and a 17. Started well and then down hill..........:D

I'd be more interested in the judges comments and critique than his marking. It's nice to win ok but it's not the be all and end all.
I enter every competition in our club purely to hear what judges have to say about my stuff. I don't however fall into the trap of shooting for competitions - I still shoot what I like and then when the themes are announced I trawl back through the archives to see if I have something to fit.
