just stumbled across this site. seems cool even though id question the how effective they are but would be cool for winter when you feel like pissing on your hands before they fall off :-)

    https://www.ribcap.ch/

this sounds scepticle but i suppose its inevitable it wont be as good just on the shape alone thatll protect your head from edges:
PSA Model Category 1; Directive 89/686/EEC warning, do not have the same protection as a helmet.

all models in swiss franks but seem about 100 give or take 10e depending on model.

Opinions? good or bad idea? cool initiative regardless i think..

I love the idea of something protective that looks more like a winter skull cap than a proper helmet, but I think that you would have to regard it as almost ineffective in any sort of a spill. The risk is that you think its going to protect you and tat it replaces a helmet - which it aint going to do. I do love going out with just a dutch winter cap, but never feel safe doing so..........just sayin' like.

Agreed. On same wavelength, mine is going out with bobble hat but it just ain't safe out there, especially the atrocious roads around. Could see it doing its job for low speed crash but no much more. 50kmh into a brick wall, good luck with your days in a wheelchair though if its all youre wearing id imagine. Would be interesting to actually see one and hold to see how sturdy it feels. One thing that cropped to mind is me wearing no helmetfor short spin to and from college and would be good for the likes of that...

would be very tempted for my 1 year old daughter for the winter months for creche run. Bit pricy though.
In the baby seat she's pretty well enclosed so doesn't need a full helmet, mostly just to stop her banging her head off the seat rather than the road, and for winter the warmth would be very nice instead of trying to get a hat on under her regular helmet.

Wouldn't wear one myself though I think, based more on looks rather than protective issues.

edit: actually the "Lenny" one is ok. or the Palmer for when all the lovely snow comes :D

Euro prices start at €85 for the Dylan, kids ones about €75.
Can't comment on quality, just have the prices in front of me.

That first photo is scary  Headwear for the zombie apocalypse?
Is that a sliver of human flesh hanging from the side of his mouth?

yep €85 but depends on the model, some more costy...

all reviews seem average based on limited protection and cost..

Ermm. I actually own one of these and wore it through last winter for commuter cycling. The major appeal was the warmth it offered without having to wear a hat-under-helmet combo. It doesn't offer anything like the protection a standard helmet does (and I wouldn't dream of wearing one on the road bike) but that's not to say it's entirely without protective properties either. And, given the relatively modest speeds I attain while commuting, I've made the judgement that the ribcap is sufficient for that kind of cycling.
