Low Lactose

    what is the causes of low lactose in milk and how do i go about improving it.
    ours has gone through the floor, levels have fallen and putting it down to all autum calvers dried off and none back in the tank yet:confused:

    That's a known cause yes,along with too much grass with nothing in it.
    I've noticed on a lot of farms a lot of yellow in the grass.
    Now normally,We'd be thinking a lack of something nutritional in the ground,like lime or something.
    But this year,especially in east Wicklow,I think its a very dry water table that's stressing the plant because its affecting nearly everyone in the area.

    How low Dar? Ours has dropped back abit, from 4.7 to 4.5 over the last few weeks, good few June/July calvers keeping that up though! About the only bloody advantage to a June calver! The 2cent fine kicks in if it drops under 4.2 doesn't it?

    From what I gather it is usually cows that are in late lactation that are milking very little.fairy common in x breeds herds from mid lactation on also.nothing that can be done I think bar milk record and dry off the low l/p ratio cows
