So came back from 2 week holiday & controller is dead. Hooked it up to ps3 to charge. Disconnected it a while later & it wouldn't work. No lights on, nothing happening when I hit ps button.
Hooked the controller again via USB. The 4 red lights flashed slowly about 4/5 times then nothing. I pressed the ps button (still connected via USB) & single red light came on & controler worked fine. When I pressed ps button on controller it said controller was fully charged. When I disconnect from USB controller wouldn't work again. I tried reset button no joy.
Is there a fix for this or us controller broken?
    Thanks

You could try some of the following......

If your official PlayStation 3 controller is only working when it is plugged into the USB:

There is a reset button on the back of the controller- this is located on the right hand side by the main screw at the top. A pin can be used to push the button down and keep this pressed for 5 seconds.

Try a different USB cable with the controller as the one being used may not be charging the controller.

Leave the controller plugged into the console for a number of hours to ensure that it is fully charged. When the battery is low on the controller the player light on the top will flash (and a prompt should appear on the screen)
    .
Try using the cable on another USB enabled device to test if this is functioning correctly.

Test the controller on another PlayStation 3 console to test there are no issues related to the console.

If the controller is still not functioning correctly there may be a fault. The controller that accompanies the console in the box is covered by a one years manufacturers warranty- therefore if there are issues you can contact the PlayStation Support Line. If this was bought independently this will be covered with a 1 year warranty from the store of purchase so you will need to return there with a valid proof of purchase.

I hooked the controller to a different ps3, same result. It worked while connected via USB, said the battery was full, yet as soon as I disconnected from USB, the controller was dead & didn't work.
Looks like I have to fork out for new one,
