Cheaper than 2 TB internal. Would it be a good idea to take the hard disk out of this and add it into something like a HP microserver?

Answering myself there, no warranty if you take it out of the case, so probably not a great idea. Also Seagate can not confirm if they come with 5400 or 7200 drives, "what ever was available at the time of assembly" seems to be official reply.

The manufacturers know this.. which is why a lot of the brands have HD to USB2/USB3 hardwired to the HD circuit board. There is no SATA connector inside for many Western Digital drives, for instance. Which I found out, to my sorrow, after a 1TB Passport Drive purchase.

Could be 5400rpm drive according to seagate they put in whatevers is available, also you'd have to decase and recase extremely carefully inthe event of a warranty claim.

Was typing at the same time as positron

If anyone gets one let us know if the USB is hardwired.

However, there is always chance they change inside for newer models...

I have only come across this with the portable 2.5" drives, not the desktop models. That might have changed though.

The USB drives, even the 3.5" disks are typically slower than their internal counterparts. And have less cache. Hence the difference in price. I'm tempted to get this though. Need a backup drive.

Does that video ever show the normal sata connector?

They call them "green" drives because they perform slower but use less energy ;-). And one can buy these "green" the same way as standard drives:
