I was going to purchase a embryo from a local breeder for €650 but he also has a recipient incalf 3 months for €2500 would it be worth buying the embryo and chancing my luck or go for the recipient, there also was a few heifers for 3k but mighten be as good as the embryo, what would be the best option

I'd be no expert but 650 is a risk but 2500 is a bigger risk again , What would you be expecting to make on the 2500 calf by the time its ready for a sale , if it hits the ground alive and well that is ?

Personally, I would go with the recipient. With luck you will have a pedigree animal and also the recipient in 6 months. What breeding is in the embro's?Depending on the breeding etc you could also get a pedigree heifer in calf or cow for that money.

The worst money i ever spend on breeding was on embryos. We bought a choice of two embryo pregnancies at an auction around 15 years ago. We had been investing heavily in our own breeding in the years before this. At the end of the day we ended up with an animal that was slightly better than our own average animal with very poor fertility. Her mother was a long way ahead of our own average animals and slightly better than our best by the time that calf was an adult animal. I'd say your money would be better spent on some good A.I. straws and a bit of attention to where they were being used.
