Worried about building work already completed

    Hi Everyone,

I need some advice, I have had some but I want to be clear about what I am getting into before I approach a builder who did some work for me.
We had our kitchen / dining wall removed 4 years ago, no apparent problem, however a neighbour who used the same builder is having some new work carried out and it has been discovered that a piece of wood has been used as a support for a load bearing wall. Our houses are exactly the same so Im assuming my joists run in the same direction in order for mine to be a load bearing wall also.
Should this have been a steel rsj? I dont want to interefere with what is there at the moment until Im clear about the situation ( eg drilling in to see whats in there ) How dangerous is this? Is it a big job to put right?
    Thanks in advance
