Irish Red IPA

Has anyone come across this style before ? A mate was in the states recently and came across it, thought it was delicious and was raving about it.

Is it a legit style ? Considering red ales are normally lightly hopped it seems like a contradiction to hop it up. Im not a massive fan of red ales normally so Id probably be more inclined to drink one of these. Never seen it here though.

Seems like there's no boundaries when it comes to style really, once it tastes good its probably gonna sell !

Theres no such thing as a 'legit style'. Red IPA is fairly widespread, 8 Wireds Tall Poppy being the best example I can think of.

Fair point, I just never came across it before. How would you compare it to an normal IPA ,is there much difference apart from the colour ?

I'd say American Amber Ale and Irish Red IPA would be pretty much the same style.

It has the caramel/toffee/nutty & slightly roasted notes of a red, with added hops. Tall Poppy is available in Redmonds, its a fantastic beer. Not sure how fresh it will be off the shelf there though, those NZ hops are best enjoyed fresh.

Yes, American amber ales definately overlap with this style alright

you might even say 5AM saint is an overlap

Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale is one of the original american amber/ red IPA I believe, it has been brewed since 1981

A couple of pubs in Dublin usually stock it when its out.

i had one in a brewpub in Mass a few years back.. at the time i thought it was a red gone wrong it looked like murky smithwicks but kicked like a mule. at the time i thought anything not in defined styles was a mistake/balls up. since anytime i go in there they have a new style ...wheat ipa. black ipa etc...

This is a great example of a hoppy red ale, as is 5AM Saint.

    Amber Ella

    Is Amber Ella red?

Genuine question. I had it at the Beerfest and really liked it, can't remember it being red though. :o

Despite its name, I would consider it more red than amber.

Despite its name, I would consider it more red than amer.

I'll be back once I've tried the bottle version! ;)

On the subject of Hoppy Reds, I'm having a G'Knight Imperial Red Ale by Oskar Blues at the moment. Nice enough but it's not the super hopbomb you'd expect from the style. It's like a cross between a typical Irish Red and an American Amber/Red IPA

Mid west and east coast red/ambers tend to be a more malts driven, it's the west coast one push more towards hop bombs/IPA

I'd have called Celebration an IPA...

They actually call it an IPA themselves, but I suppose all that really goes to show is how blurred the lines can be when labelling beer styles.

It is possible the first "red ipa" been brewed since 1981

    But its not red...

Its pretty dark for a pale ale alright, but I'd never have looked at it and thought it was a red ale.

Dark pale/amber/red it kind fits some when depending on you view.

    Amber Ella

Way way better than 5am saint IMO. The best amber/red ale I have tasted.
