Lads anyone now much about these? A buddy of mine spotted one last week and was asking me, i know the orginal ones were based ont eh massey and the newer ones based ont eh NH 6640, 7740, and 7840's. The one he is looking at is based on the massey so i think its basiclly a 390 MF, is that right?

Its the revervse drive aspect that he likes, this particular one has a damaged loader and mounting but he is not really bothered by that as he dosent need the loader, he has a rear mounted shear grab he uses for the silage and cleaning out the pens so it would be that is used most often, also he would be putting a buckrake on it for pushing up silage. He also has a smaller tractor with a loader that is used for light loader work like lifting straw bales and bucket work. I know they are used mostly for loader work but how are they for normal tractor work like spreading slurry, fertilzer, trailer work and a bit of tillage (harrowing, ploughing and rolling).

Ford ones only on a 7740 and 7840.

As you say the MF ones are 390 based.

Would have thought the cab would be quite small for those tasks but if its cheap???

i always assumed it was the ordinary MF gearbox with manual shuttle, think the move to NH was to use the electric shuttle on 40 seris, less clutching. the torque convertor is great for loader work but not much use for tractor work where havign the right speed is required.

The Massey one I drove had a gearbox and shuttle.... Cool yoke and easy enough to swap round .... Know it was different system with the ford ones..
Can you get a front linkage on them instead of the hydraulic weight box, might be handy if yr doing tillage work

this one has a front linkage but no front pto. the small cab is a bit off putting espically as it would be replacing a ford 7710SQ, and the shuttle on them dosent seem to be very good.

i was suggesting he look for a massey 50EX and trade the 5600 with the loader, you can get them with a rear linkage, pto and hitch that way he can still put the yard scraper on the back. not sure how good it would be for pushign up silage but our 50HX has great grunt for a small yoke in 1st gear (i have pulled lorrys up hills with it). they have the same shuttle as the diggers which is very handy for loader work. that way he can kepp the big tractor for the heavy work and still be able to fit a big shear grab to the front

If he is blue to the core, you could also suggest a Ford 545D.;)

Even the supply of them in the UK has dried up too it seems.

They had no lift arms though, only a compressor so may not suit the OP neighbour.

the uncle had a MF based one of these. She had a 4 speed torque gearbox, which we believe was similar to a 50 hx.

She was a loader tractor alone, pushing up silage , bales, dung, etc
He tried her on the plough and was no good for applications like that , you had to rev the hole out of her to get her to move , the same with pulling a trailer, heading up hill with a load meant 1st gear and revved out

excat same as the digger then. i think he will go for one of these alright, the small loader is limiting him at the mo but he doesnt use it much. he has been lookign at getting a fodder box for the beet and a hydrulic one can be mounted on the front of these easy enough, swap a few hoses and you can change from silage to beet easy enough

I have one of the last ones built using the Massey 390T which i purchased in 2006, I mainly use it as a loader but I also used it for Mowing & Turning Hay and have drawn silage also with it with a handy 12 ft trailer, it has 12 forward & 12 reverse gears with Gearbox and shuttle controls, It is used all year round in a stable yard. The attachments i have include front weight box & links, on the loader there is a bucket pallet forks bale pick & bale paddles. it is great for cleaning out tight sheds as it turns tighter than any regular small tractor & loader (massey 135 etc) as it is rear steering when used as a loader the previous owner used it to push up silage. the only drawback is it only has a 20k box
I would proberly sell mine if you are interested.

He went with the 50eX in the end.

Has the shear grab on the front and the fodder box on the back. Quick attach to swap from the box to the scraper.

    Very happy with it.
