Extending Upwards

I recently posted on here regarding an extension to a bungalow I was considering.

A recent suggestion was to extend upwards and turn the bungalow into a dormer.
The current build is 85sq m rectangular shape.
    I've a few questions.
Would this be a less expensive route?
Any rough guesses at cost to builders finish?
How long would such a job take?

Would I have to move out while works went on?

    Many thanks for any help.

    1. yes
    2. seek planning, structural survey of existing walls, remove entire roof and ceiling, structural drawings for new roof and possible wall bracing, new first floor, walls, ceilings & roof,M&E, fixtures and fittings.....
    3. depends on the weather, your method of building, condition of existing, method of contracting work
    4. yes
