Does anyone write letters anymore

Don't know what got it into my head the other day but I hadn't been in contact with a good friend, that emigrated a few years back, in a while. We've skyped and emailed plenty in the past, but I had it in my head to write a letter with pen and paper and post it. Anyway it made me curious to see if many of you still write personal letters to friends once in a while still.

Trying not to sound corny, but actually I really enjoyed writing it. It was almost therapeutic for me, it was relaxing to do and an enjoyable experience, I hadn't written a letter to a friend in many years as opposed to emailing. Absolutely it does take longer (not even including the fact that you got to go down to the post office to send it off even) to write as opposed to the act of typing words, but the speed of my writing allowed me to compose my thoughts ... maybe not better but certainly differently. Also the good old PS and PPS came into use as good afterthoughts a time later after my writing. I wrote about three foolscap pages ... I think the last time I wrote more than that in one sitting was when I sat my Leaving Cert English many many many years ago. I'm not trying to make this out to be a revelation to anyone, but it was a pleasant re-acquaintance for me with this form. Maybe it's just the novelty factor but this seemed a more personal thing to do, hope my pal can read my writing now :D

    Dear Sir or Madam.

Thank you very much for posting your thoughts about letter writing. I hope this finds you in good health.

    Yours sincerely

Anyway I though I remembered the subject being covered here recently and indeed it was.

I just got a nice thank you letter after sending back a present with my daughter for her Granny. Nothing nice than a real letter.

Hate writing letters. I hate those pen dimples you develop on your finger.

Actually was just taking to my wife about this yesterday. She reckons the last proper letter she got was from moi in the middle 1990s.

I wonder will it be harder for historians to put together a picture of people in the future as all emails are eventually deleted. A lot of letters are kept.

But do you write letters, or just draw them?

They can just read internet forums. I wonder what will Irish people think of the folk in After Hours in a hundred years time?

I actually wrote to my aunt in England a few days ago, but she's the only person I'd ever write to. I would much prefer to be able to email her, but she's getting on in years and would'nt have a clue how to use a computer (or any desire to learn). Would only write to her 2 or 3 times a year, so always plenty of news in our letters.

I grew up in England, and when I was a kid (late 80's, early 90's), I used to write to my nana in Ireland just about every week, and send letters to my friends, even if I'd been at school with them all week.

Another thing that people dont send anymore is postcards. I used to love getting them and sticking them on the fridge.....

I still send postcards, if that counts

I have a couple of friends who (strangely) collect postcards, so if I go somewhere new I usually send them one

And obviously I send begging letters to celebrities, send out 50 a day, it only take one to take pity on me......

Even the thought of writing a real letter makes my hands ache.

I like writing letters, and I do send letters quite often. I love sending and receiving postcards, and I'm constantly sending cards to people. It's becoming such a dated thing to do, but I still like it.

My brother has been abroad for the last few months and he isn't a user of any social media so, aside from the occasional e-mail and a weekly phone call, the only recorded communication we have him is the traditional handwritten letter.

We've been keeping all of his letters in a nice collection and, whatever is in it, seeing a piece of paper with his handwriting is that bit more special than reading an e-mail from a screen (yes I'm aware of the irony that I'm saying this on a discussion website).

So yes, people do still write letters anymore! :)
