The idea is simple, you pick who you think is the best 1-15 from this years championship. It can be whoever you think, from players from 15 different counties to a pick of two teams. Just one rule, you cannot pick a full county panel i.e. You can't pick a full Tyrone panel, there has to be atleast two counties represented in your selection. After a week or so, I'll put together the most commonly selected players and post it up here. If there's a tie for a position, they'll go into a hat. If you want, you can also nominate a manager.

Good idea for a thread, lot of work for ya!

Tough to pick off the top of my head, so sorry if any glaring omissions. Connolly a close one over Dillon at 12 for me, similar with MDMA over AOS. Brogan on basis of last 2 games (2-9 in 2 games). Fitted Higgins in as a half back. Cluxton over Quirke for his kick outs.

    1. Cluxton
    2. M O Se 3. N McGee 4. Killian Clarke
    5. Dessie Mone 6. D. Vaughan 7. K Higgins
    8. MD McAuley 9. S Cavanagh
    10. Paul Flynn 11. The Gooch 12. Connolly
    13. C O'Connor 14. Goulding 15. B Brogan (on basis of today)

Sunday Game Team of the Year includes Colin Walshe from Monaghan, I see nobody here mentioned him.

    also Cian O'Sullivan centre back

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 868 ✭✭✭Gerry91

    Cluxton

    Cunniffe Cafferkey O'Carroll
    Keegan Vaughan Boyle

    MDMA SOS

    Flynn Gooch Connolly
    O'Donoghue Freeman COC

COS was mid all year so not going to cop out and put him CB

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 868 ✭✭✭Gerry91

    Boyle player of the year

I'd actually give Cillian young player I think, although was average yesterday

    KK close second

I really dont get the fuss about COC. A couple of garbage time hat tricks most of which were tap ins. Missed a couple of easy frees in first half, went missing then wasted injury time lining up 20 yard frees

I see that Tom Cunniffe and Chris Barrett are both 5/1 with PP.

Could be worth a shot if they don't want to put both fullbacks O'Carroll and Cafferkey in there.
Seems that Higgins is guaranteed one, but a lot depends on where he's put.

Aidan O'Shea is 1/3 which isn't bad, as I would have thought he's a certainty.

I'd give it to him by default I think. No under 21 really stood out. KK, Mannion had their moments- not enough in the latter stages though

McCaffrey will get it but did nothing in last two games

Doubt he'll even start next year with Nolan surely back

No need for the roll eyes, I prefaced my team by saying it was off the top of my head, no need for the sarcasm. I wanted to find a position for Higgins and thought I'd best fit him in the half back line. I'd probably put Keegan in, either over Vaughan (which would imbalance my HB line, or for Mone (who I thought was Monaghan's driving force). Could just of easily put Cian O'Sullivan into my half back line, but probably would have got stick for that too. Can't win.

It's MY pick, I'm allowed have my own opinion.

    I'd probably go for:

    Cluxton
    Cunniffe Cafferkey Higgins
    Keegan Vaughan Boyle
    O'Shea McAuley
    Cavanagh Cooper Flynn
    O'Connor Brogan McManus

I really doubt Mayo will get all 6 backs but I think they deserve it. I really wanted to include Cian Mackey as I thought he was class, but I can't see a place to fit him in.

It's funny that while Mayo didn't win the AI they should dominate the all-stars. I could've selected 6 of the Mayo backs, and Cunniffe would've been unlucky to miss out even at that, but I had to accommodate CO'S.

Midfield is especially interesting. People say that Cavanagh went missing vs Donegal and Mayo, but he didn't, he had 2 good games those days, but in comparison to the games against Kildare, Meath and Monaghan he didn't reach his potential. Even saying that, I couldn't put him in, nor AO'S. Neither deserved it IMO. AO'S would only be my 5th pick for midf, and it saddens me to see that one (albeit immense) performance is enough to see someone through.

POTY is between Cooper and Macauley, I'd go for Cooper. He had 5 excellent games where he orchestrated the Kerry attack, particularly so against Dublin.

YPOTY is more interesting. I think CK should be in with a shout, he did a lot of donkey work for Dublin that seemed to go unnoticed, and he never shirked away from a challenge. Obviously JMcC and COC are the front-runners, with COC probably getting it.

It was a good year for football IMO, but I suppose the fact that there was 2 teams so far out in front of everyone else was a bit of a let down. I was disappointed with Cork and Donegal, 2 teams (obviously enough) with huge potential.

I won't pick a team but I will make the case for Drew Wylie from Monaghan at number 3. Purely on the basis of statistics which can be used to prove anything.

He came on late against Antrim. Against Cavan he kept Eugene Keating to one point. In my opinion Keating was the main mover for Cavan in attack all year eventhough Martin Dunne got most of the scores. Wylie then kept Colm McFadden and Stephen O'Neill scoreless in the Donegal and Tyrone games (McFadden got four points from frees). He did not stand out that much in general play but as a defender he did his job well.

    YOTY C O'Connor

Average enough championship you could count on one hand the amount of good games. Mayo made it interesting as we all wondered would they finally end their famine however for me The All Ireland winner always looked likely to come from Kerry v Dublin semi final and thats how it turned out.

After thinking about it for a bit, I'd choose

    Cluxton

    Cunniffe Cafferkey Higgins

    Keegan O'Sullivan Boyle

    A.O'Shea McAuley

    Flynn Cooper Connolly

    O'Sullivan McManus Brogan

P.S. I'll leave this up for another week and then pick the team at the same time as the hurling.

You left out Boyle and Keegan who should be de-finites for an All Star, Vaughan i would remove. Lorcan Mulvey instead of C O'Connor who was top scorer even after missing some games ???

Is there anyone from places other than Mayo that you feel was hard done by?

I've said elsewhere I think Keegan in particular has been wildly overblown this year, was pretty awful in the final. Boyle is probably unlucky but I'm picking Higgins ahead of him every day of the week.

Some Mayo people seem to underrate Vaughan as much as they over rate Boyle and especially Keegan which I find strange.

Lorcan Mulvey is a very easy pick IMO.

1: Cluxton (POTY- Dublin wouldn't have won without him, simple as).
    2: C. O'Sullivan (Dublin's Mr Fix-It...brilliant when it mattered most)
3: Wylie (Most effective FB in country)
    4: Higgins
    5: Keegan
    6: Boyle
    7: James McCarthy
8: A O'Shea (just edges the brother who was better in semi and final)
    9: MDMC
    10: Flynn
    11: Gooch
12: Cavanagh will be chosen here but C Mackey will be very unlucky.
13: O'Donoghue (O'Connor will get it but shouldn't IMO - take away a terrible Donegal turning up and he did all his damage against 2nd rate teams)
14: McManus (Monaghan's match winner throughout championship...fouling was the only way Tyrone could stop him)
    15: BB

    6 Dubs, 4 Mayo, 2 Monaghan, 2 Kerry, 1 Tyrone.

Don't think any of the 3 favourites for YPOTY deserve it so my choice would be Meath's Eamonn Wallace. Was consistently good throughout the Championship, a regular scorer and finished with one of the performances of the year against a very defensive Tyrone, his pace helping him take them for 1-3 from play.

Way too many guys out of position here in all honesty. COS only played a tiny bit of the final in corner back and his role all year couldn't be much more different to a CB's. KH only started two games in the corner, albeit he moved back for a while in semi and final.

Connolly could well get 12 or Higgins if that's the route they go

Late to the party, but here's my effort anyway, with some justifications where needed!

    1. Stephen Cluxton. (Hennelly unlucky..but Cluxton is so influential.)
    2. Colin Walshe. (Outstnading in every game.)
    3. Ger Cafferkey. (Even in final, he largely controlled BB 1 v 1. )
    4. Keith Higgins. (Had to put him in somewhere, unbelievable engine.)
    5. James McCarthy. (Better use of possession than Boyle edges it)
    6. Cian O'Sullivan (Cheating a bit, but 2nd half in the semi final was crucial)
    7. Lee Keegan (Was a bit loose on Connolly in final, but excellent year overall)
    8. Aidan O'Shea (as someone said, Seamie had a better end to the year, close.)
    9. MD McAuley (For a man with poor kicking ability, had a massive input every game)
    10. Paul Flynn (Not far off best all round player in the country IMO.)
    11. Colm Cooper (Why didn't we play him on the 40 5 years ago!)
    12. Seán Kavanagh (Cheating again, but he plays like a roving half fwd anyway)
    13. James O'Donoghue (A ray of hope for Kerry. A truly class forward.)
    14. Bernard Brogan (Up to 1/4 final he was nowhere..but unreal from then on.)
    15. Diarmuid Connolly (Becoming a bit more consistent, kicking scores even when not playing that well. A very important player for Dubs this year.)

    1.Stephen Cluxton.

    2.Colin Walshe 3.Ger Cafferkey 4.Keith Higgins

    5.James McCarthy 6.Cian O'Sullivan 7.Lee Keegan

    8.Aidan O'Shea 9.MDMA

    10.Paul Flynn 11.Gooch 12.Seán Kavanagh

    13.James O'Donoghue 14.Bernard Brogan 15.Diarmuid Connolly

    Stephen Cluxton

    Rory? O'Carroll
    Ger Cafferkey
    Chris Barrett

    Colm Boyle
Donal Vaughan (letting my Mayo bias out here but I really don't think O'Sullivan deserves to be on it - honourable shout for Dessie Mone)
    Lee Keegan

Seamus O'Shea (will be Aidan but this is my pick)
    Michael Dara McAuley

    Keith Higgins
    Colm Cooper
    Sean Cavanagh

    Conor McManus
    James O'Donoghue / Cillian O'Connor (honestly can't split them)
    Bernard Brogan

Also a good shout to switch Higgins back to Barrett's position and put Paul Flynn in half forward.

Player of the Year : Lee Keegan / Michael Dara
Young Player of the Year : Cillian O'Connor

    My team of the year:

    Stephen Cluxton (Dublin)

    Colin Walshe (Monaghan)
    Ger Cafferkey (Mayo)
    Killian Clarke (Cavan)

    Lee Keegan (Mayo)
    Cian O'Sullivan (Dublin)
    James McCarthy (Dublin)

    Michael Dara McAuley (Dublin)
    Aidan O'Shea (Mayo)

    Cian Mackey (Cavan)
    Colm Cooper (Kerry)
    Paul Flynn (Dublin)

    Cillian O'Connor (Mayo)
    Martin Dunne (Cavan)
    Bernard Brogan (Dublin)

Player of the year: Stephen Cluxton
Young player of the year: Killian Clarke (absolutely class for Cavan, also played a huge part in the U21 success and was badly missed when Cavan couldn't play him in the league).

    I know, I'm biased.

Crazy that gooch isn't even nominated for player of the year. Showed this year more than ever that he's the greatest forward of this generation. Most natural footballer to ever play the game.

    1. Cluxton- Offers so much more to the team than any other keeper.
    2. Colin Walshe- Sticky like Velcro
    3. Ger Cafferky- Had a solid year and the final wasnt entirely at fault for brogans haul.
    4. Keith Higgins- Didn't predominately play here but couldn't leave him out, great year
    5. Lee Keegan- Strong and consistent
    6. Colm Boyle- As above
    7. James Mc Carthy- Effective use of the ball, tight marker also. Great player
    8. MDMA- Bundles of energy and highly effective
    9. Sean Cavanagh- Along with MDMA, the best midfielder this year
    10. Paul Flynn- So consistent. Gets through so much dirty work and uses the ball so well. Pops up with the odd score too
    11. Colm Cooper- Genius
    12. Diarmuid Connolly- Stood up when the game was in the melting pot vs kerry.
    13. James O'Donoghue- Pace, balance and skill. Had a great year.
    14. Bernard Brogan- Quiet enough early in the season but is always dublins most marked man thus creates space for others. Finished top scorer from play in the championship.
    15. Conor Mc Manus- A fine footballer

Player of the year- Mc Cauley

    Dublin- 6, Mayo- 4, Kerry-2, Monaghan-2, Tyrone- 1

Not a bad call I think in general. Still don't think O'Sullivan should have got one but if you take my comments into account and the sentence at the bottom, I had the majority! :p
