Handing in wallet I found

About ten years ago I was flying to Edinburgh for the weekend, not long after the euro came out. After checking in through security etc I was walking along towards the gate when I found a wallet on the ground. It had about 800-1200 euro in it in 50s and it also had the owners boarding card.
I asked someone working in airport where I could hand it in to security. They told me I would have to go back out through the main security to do that.
As it was nearly time for the flight I decided to go to the gate and have the person paged.
There was no reply. When it came to boarding time I had to make a decision so I left the wallet with the Serviceair guy behind the desk at the Gate explaining to him that I'd found it and that the owner was on this flight. He looked at the contents and for the briefest second his face lit up.
I looked around for empty seats on the flight but there were none so I'm guessing the guy and his partner got on.
I've always wondered if he got his money though. I can still remember the dudes surname.. it was O'Brien

you should have brought it on board with you and have the stewardess locate the owner.

Well if he boarded then he must have got his boarding card back.

So the agent gave everything back to him or just took the money and gave him everything else back, pretending he knew nothing about the money.

i'm always suspicious when i don't receive a thank you from the owner. you have to think that most people would at least pass on a thank you message in this day and age.

i had some issues handing in a camera and some cash to the guards a few years back. i wont go into detail but it seems i never did it at all, no record of them receiving it let alone finding the owner.

Have a read of the stinge thread. It's littered with stories like that. Large sums of money found and barely a word of thanks.

As far as I can see, the common theme is that these people generally have lots of money, are rude AND / OR are indifferent when it is returned and therefore don't see the loss of money as anything more than an inconvenience.

Which makes me think, If I ever saw a wallet stuffed with wads of cash left in an airport jacks, would I take it? I would have said no at one point but having experienced this kind of "thanks" for returning items in the past, I may at least have a good think about it before handing it over.

What does the wallet look like? Is it leather bound and mahogany smelling? Or is it a tatty old envelope?

I found and handed back a wad of at least £10k back when I was just a lad.
No 'thank you', just shouted at demanding to know if I took any before she walked off.

She wasn't overly wealthy and was probably in a bad state once she realised it was missing. But still. Thought there was at least a £20 in it for me.

    Aul bitch

My mum found a fancy wallet in a safe in Gran Canaria belonging to a girl from Liverpool. Few pound and driving licence and cards. Mum rang her and told her we had it.

    The wallet went:
    Ryanair Gran Canaria to Dublin.
    Bus Eireann to Donegal.
    Bus Eireann to Dublin.

    Me: Stena to Holyhead.
    Drove up.
Met up with her outside Wetherspoons in Liverpool city centre while over for a match.

If you dont have honesty, you have nothing.

    Huh?

You'd decide whether to hand it in or not based on whether you thought youre were going to get sufficient thanks?

I regularly find money dropped on the floor in my shop.

I ALWAYS go back on the camera to see who dropped it. If/when they come back, I give it to them.

Few years ago, I found a paycheck on my shop floor. Saw who dropped it and she came back in a panic. She was so relieved when I gave it to her. I even cashed it and she left with the cash.

Someone found a stuffed wallet outside on the pavement. Handed it into me. I rang the credit card company and explained I had it and it was safe. Could you ring the owner please. 15 mins later he came galloping in. Was delighted.

I was in an electrical wholesaler in Ballymount, and left my wallet on the counter. The manager found a trade card for CSNA trade association, and rang them. They rang me and told me. I needed the wallet THAT NIGHT as ID for the ferry to the uk and it had all my sterling in it.

Its nice to be nice and what goes around, comes around.

iirc I got a thank you card with 20quid in it for handing in a old hand bag to the Guards which they obviously got back to its owner. Bag had been stolen and any credit cards or cash had gone even the lining had been ripped out, but the bag was full of one persons medical documents and even had a stack of medical insurance documents so I guessed it was going to save someone a whole load of hassle if they go it back and they obviously agreed.

Maybe, I don't know. People tend to reward you for returning something they really value.

So if they don't reward you, they don't value it, so why bother returning it? I know that sounds horrible in theory, I think I would always return stuff I find.

I found a jacket that contained a driving licence, atm card, wallet and other id docs. I was too lazy to try to chase down the owner, so I handed it in to a cashier where the atm card was issued. She looked up the system, phoned the owner immediately for me and he got the jacket back from the bank.
Also saw a car in a slow moving traffic jam with a wallet on top of the passenger side roof. Tried to point it out to the occupants of the car but they would not roll down their window to listen. They probably thought I was a looney pointing above the car and mouthing off. Hopefully they lost it

Same happened a few weeks ago , I lady passed us with top speed and her wallet went flying off the top of her roof. Stopped the car safely and picked it up, looked at the address and realised it was nearby in the country side so headed in the direction to see if I could find her . Didn't find her but managed to accidentally to ask her niece for directions, she was thrilled and put me straight on the phone to her aunt who collected it then. Delighted she got it back . :)

I got it, thank you. Relax and move on with your life.

Yeh my friend found a wallet with a few hundred and a Brown Thomas voucher in it - the owner barely muttered a thanks while half-looking at her. My friend was raging she didn't lift a note or two.
It's Boards so no doubt someone will do some form of mental gymnastics to figure out how it's ok to be a rude, ungrateful ****, but it's obviously not in any way normal and basic courtesy should be mandatory.

A wad? Surely a small suitcase?

I could have did with the hug ! I got a thanks but seeing the joy in her getting her purse back was enough. She was a senior citizen and her license , med card, and money was in it .

I'd like to think they received it; but doubt you'll ever know for certain though. It was nice of you though to hand it to security :)

If you dont have honesty, you have nothing.

Completely agree with that! I'll always stick to my guns regardless of whom tries to get one over me by lieing and covering their asses! Always speak the truth regardess of consequences, I like having a clear conscience (not to mention fact I cannot lie to save my life)! Just the way I was raised, Thankfully :)
