I'd love to give long haul trucking a try in the USA. I like driving and listening to the radio but I suppose sleeping in the god dam thing would get old quick. :pac:. Driver's salaries vary, most earn by the mile, starting rate is 25c for company drivers. It ranges upwards from that, Owner Operators can earn 6 figures a year.

A fisherman is another manly profession which I'm probably not cut out for. Wearing the overalls and hauling gear for hours on end etc.

Like trucking salaries vary drastically, A crab fisherman in Alaska can earn 50k for one 5 week season but a deckhand working onboard a trawler in Ireland would be lucky to make half that in a year.

What profession would you like to experience without having to commit to it?

Working on one of those Alaskan boats, fishing for King Crab in the Bering Sea would be great.Although, I hate heights, get seasick and have a healthy disregard for personal safety, I'd say I'd be fine.

Have you been watching DC like myself? :pac:

If you can put up with the grind sleep deprivation etc you need only work 6 months in a year. The crab boats do two seasons King Crab (late October-eary December) and Opillio (early January early March), they tender salmon during July and August. A normal guy on the deck of a big boat could earn 200k for the 6 months. Apparently this used to be bigger in the early 90s with crew members earning up to 25k a week in crab season. Hence the massive influx of lads to Alaska. The fisheries have slowed down recently and the quota system has put an end to the megabucks but they still earn well above average for blue collar labour.

I remember watching a Louis Theroux behind the scenes look at a filming. The stuff is so choreographed and stop start acted that the actor and actress seemed pretty bored

Having said that apart from Lisa Ann most American porn is unwatchable rubbish anyway.

In Ireland your local coroner is usually a solicitor or GP. They investigate the death but they're not present at the scene and they don't witness the autopsy, if one is performed. Years ago they did but this practice has changed.

Only 15 minutes?? That was a short one.

No, but he does one (well two) of the jobs that he posted here. And it doesn't involve driving.

no it was long.... just one of those high speed trains :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,650 ✭✭✭✭minidazzler

I know a guy who fishes every summer in the Bering Sea for 6 weeks. Makes 30 grand for that 6 weeks and then gets a bonus a few months later if the company make or exceed quota. Contrary to what people think, you don't live in or bring the fish to Alaska. You generally live in Washington State near Seattle.
