Yep, checked luggage is okay, but not carry on. No need to declare to TSA either.

You should be okay. Whenever I am going to Ireland to hunt, I always bring a few knives and my Leatherman in addition to other necessities.

As long as the item is legal for you to have in the States, you should not have any problem leaving the States with it.

As long as the item is legal for you to have in Eire, you should not have any problem getting in to Eire with it.

The States (TSA) primary concern is safety and American Law. A knife in a carry on luggage is not a safety concern.

What airline are you flying on?

As per Aer Lingus, you cannot bring sharp objects ON you or in your carry on.

Go here, to TSA, in the box stating "When I Fly,Can I Bring My...?" type in knife and select your type of knife. They basically state the same thing I have. It wouldn't hurt to print a page of pertinent information.

Also, on your outgoing flight, ask the airline exactly what you asked here. Try and get a link or the same information in writing. Again, it would not hurt.

If your kershaw is a speedsafe, I would not try to bring it as it might be considered as a flick knife.

Maybe a good idea to keep in mind that Leatherman is no longer made in the US. My replacement one ( they do honour their garanties ) says made in China on it and I think it shows.
