What is being Irish? Do you have to be born on the island of Ireland to be Irish? Are people born to Irish parents abroad not Irish?

Are kids born to two immigrants in Ireland Irish? Are people who are born on the island of Ireland Irish whether they like it or not?

Too many questions, even more answers, infinite arguments.:(

Do you prefer brown bread or white for toasting Chuck?

I prefer wholemeal, with a nutty crust.:)

    What is being Irish?

    Having Irish Nationality / Citizenship.

Do you have to be born on the island of Ireland to be Irish?

    No, not at all.

Are people born to Irish parents abroad not Irish?

Depends on the situations, they can be Irish if they want to be.

Are kids born to two immigrants in Ireland Irish?

    Sure, why not?

Are people who are born on the island of Ireland Irish whether they like it or not?

    Not necessarily. Meh.

Whatever country youve lived in for most of your life I suppose.

You are whatever you identify with. A bit like many Scottish people would put Scotland first and Britain second.

TBH, I think being Irish is a state of mind. If you feel Irish (and are fully compos mentis) then you're Irish - regardless of the oxymoron :)

I think the importance of brown v white declines when bread is put in the toaster because it's being cooked twice.

Soft, white bread for a crisp sammich. Everything else is negotiable.

Who cares Habibi? It's all brown when it comes out of the toaster :D

    How?

What exactly is so damn controversial about asking a question on something so fundamental to people as identity?

Because in my years of being here, this question has been asked before. And not with pretty results.

Whatever about yeast bread, you'll spend the whole day trying to get a brown crust on soda bread. One of those mysteries of the universe, I suppose.

Well this is a sad reflection on the us who have a stake in the notion of 'being Irish', as per the title of the thread, imo.

Don't turn your back on pitta in the toaster. Whole house will be a fireball in a minute.

Ah, but it is not the appearance that gives the flavour, it is the ingredients

What stake do you have in being Irish?

I believe there is a question about the immersion on the citizenship test.
