Do most people not care that some humans are making whole species extinct?

In 2011 Africa's black western Rhino was declared extinct now it looks like South Africa's Rhinos are coming close to extinction. Stuff like this makes me cringe when I hear people say that humans are better than animals ect. How can we claim to be "above" other animals when this goes on. Sorry for the rant but this is really annoying. Why do people think they have the right to kill other intelligent creatures?

We are better than animals proofs in the fact they are dead and we are not

and no i don't care in the lest Ireland wiped out anything vaguely threaten to us or our useful domesticated animals a long time ago a very good thing i believe

Why oh why do these emotive titles have to be used? I'm sure plenty of people do care, but what are they supposed to do to stop it?

Because wiping out extinct species is emotive.

Sorry about the Rhinos, I won't hunt them or any other endangered species in future.

    Happy now?

You should see what destruction humans cause to each other on a daily basis, it's not just confined to animals.

No its not its completely natural 99.9% of all species that where ever on earth are dead who gives a crap ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,299 ✭✭✭✭The Backwards Man

There was millions of species that went extinct before we came around, and millions more will long after we are gone extinct ourselves. It's sad I know, but to use a cliche, that's life.

Too busy with global warming and polar bears.
No time for important matters like the Rain Forests or Rhino's.

Some idiots in China are taking ivory because it looks nice and as a result intelligent creatures are dying. It's not natural in the slightest.

99% of all life that's been on earth has become extinct, it happened before we'we around and long after us too. It's a huge shame that certain species become extinct, especially big beautiful animals like rhinos, but some spp. just aren't viable anymore, and there comes a time when you have to look at how much the investment put into keeping a spp. going is offset by letting natural events take their course.

I'd be more concerned about key economical spp. like bees going into decline and the massive impact it's having on local ecology.

there's a difference between natural extinction and extinction caused directly by humans and their activities. The former is inevitable, the latter is inexcusable.

In the long run, even if we destroy and nuke everything, something, a virus or bacteria will survive. All species go instinct, and we will too, eventually.

It's only when the sun goes Nova, that will be the ultimate sterilisation event.

    Have a great night!

Well ya it is natural its just a superior hunter species using a prey animal for resources

Thats life i personal dont agree with killing them for the sake of it though and ivory would seem to be something you could substitute with a man made material but id be lieing if i said im going to lose sleep over it

Hyper-consumerism is literally consuming the very planet we're on.

Personally, I think the trajectory we're on won't change until we have a mass extinction event.

    Gotta nuke somethin'.

I was thinking more along the lines of a massive volcanic eruption blocking the sun for a couple of years, a vicious airborne virus, or passing thru a cosmic dust cloud or something.

    Natural like.

I try not to care about things that I cannot change. The rhinos are going extinct because of evolution. If it's meant to be, then let it happen. We kill more cows and chickens than rhinos and they seem to survive. It's the rhinos own fault for not preparing for this. Lazy feckers.

oh please do explain that one.

Perhaps if a species doesn't adapt to the new prime species on the block then they have reached a natural dead end of their evolution it will naturally either be displaced or wiped out in favour of the prime species or in the case of humans something more useful to them farmland/domesticated animals etc

Dogs have done it amazingly well they will survive as long as we are around cause they are useful to us in many difference ways they have adapted to.

Oh yes, good point, let's wipe every single animal off the face of the planet.

After all, unless they grow bulletproof skin or dont devlope guns sticking out of their forehead, they deserve to be lost to our greed and unnecessary slaughter!

This isnt true at all. If most people were as empathetic towards other living creatures as they are people, there would be huge international pressure on those countries without sufficient programs and policies in place to preserve the endangered species. The average joe doesnt care.

Nice over the top reaction there champ

I wouldn't support or allow killing any animal for no reason which includes witch doctory nonsense or to provide for materials we have alternatives to however when it comes down to survival then they lose thats nature

What happens when there's more humans than the planet can support and ecosystems collapse because we killed everything for ourselves, who loses then?

We are not above anything, that mentality will kill our species in the end, everything must be regulated, us and our behaviour included.

Regulate yourself then get off the internet and stop using massive amounts of power to write out a few lines of text if you truly believe that .

Our species has survived doom mongers about over population and resource collapse since at the very lest the 1800s

Oh just fyi humans havent really relied on a natural egosystem for christ knows how long we have 7 billion people cause of our technology not the good earth apon which we are so mean to :(

They are bred for the meat and poultry industry, they don't have a superior evolutionary advantage that the rhinos are too stupid to copy.

How do you know where I get my energy? In my area it's wind energy that powers a fair amount of houses, not a massive amount, but at least it's a start.

Over population is a real growing problem not even comparable to the 1800s because we are far better at keep ourselves alive now, that's only going to continue at a faster rate.
Sticking your head in the sand thinking nothing is wrong and everything always will be is what causes nearly all our problems. Global warming being one on going example of that.

We can't just keep killing off species as we please. It'll only come back to bite us in the ass in the end.

You could probably argue that this form of extinction is as natural as any other really

We should be more worried about the decline in bee population than rhinos going extinct.

I was joking :( I also don't think that rhino's being lazy is why they became extinct in case anyone feels the need to point that out.

I find it quite depressing that such animals are becoming extinct due to a belief by the Chinese that ivory potions will help their virility etc.

I didnt say most people care or that the average everyday people walking the street care, I mean that the people that do care are on another continent away from the endangered species to do anything about it

Yes but id say your wrong as Earths ablity to sustain us is inherently linked to our ability to build a society and advance apon it nearly every single famine or food shortage now and in the past was due to societal problems 7.2 billion people is not to much for earth even though in 1800 they thought 1 billion would be the tipping point and when it peaks out at 9-10b that wont be to much either once our technology continues to advance which it will most likely.

Is that the global warming that was going to have the artic ice free this year but got it spectacularly wrong and hasn't seen a rise in temperature since 1998 ? ...Daw people still blindly believe this stuff but thats a different discussion
