Thinking of Upgrading

    Hi there,

So I'm considering upgrading my gaming PC. My main reasons for wanting to upgrade is the noise of my PC at the moment. My CPU fan is currently the stock one that comes with the I5 CPU's. I'm looking for a good CPU fan that's not noisy as well as some Case Fans, I would consider a water cooling. I'm also looking for a SSD. Not sure weather that would 120GB or 250GB depends on the price really.

Now this next part is really me just asking but I currently have

    I5 3450
    HIS 7850 1BG
    8GB Ram
    450 Watt PSU

So I wondering if you think it's worth upgrading to a overclockable Haswell CPU and getting a new graphics card that really good at overclocking aswell?

    Thanks in advance :)

Need more info. What are your total system specs including monitor size and resolution?

I don't think it's worth upgrading to an overclockable Haswell just yet. You're not going to see much of an improvement over what you currently have.

A graphics card update could give you a nice boost though. Noise levels would be easy enough to sort out as well.

You can get a decent cheaper cpu cooler that will reduce noise a lot and get a newer card that runs quietly.

For SSD look at new Samsung Evo series, they are almost on par with Pro series (much more expensive ones) at a cost of regular Samsung SSDs.

Noise is affected by your stock cooler and possibly amount of case fans.

You might need to up wattage to 500W on PSU if planning to get unlocked CPU. Also depending on what GPU you end up with, you might run out of PCIe connections and borrowing from 4-pin molex with adapter isn't the best idea either.

    What's your budget?

    These are good.

    Sapphire 7950 vapor-x €250

    Coolermaster hyper 212 evo €30

If you are happy with performance and it's really just the noise that is annoying you then maybe just get the cpu cooler and a new silenced case like the Nanoxia deep silence 1 or 2 or the Fractal Design R4 or the Cooltek Antiphon.

You can change the speed of any fans connected to your mainboard through the bios as well.

I knew I was forgetting to tell you something haha, My budget is €400 so that fits in nicely. How would that card overclock and would I need some new thermal paste for the fan?

The card is a great overclocker. Of course it depends on other variables like case airflow ect but it has a lot of headroom if you can keep it cool. The cooler on it goes a long way. It's one of the best ones.

Maybe add a couple of extra case fans and a fan controller. How many 3 pin fan headers are on the board?

If noise is really annoying you though I would definitely consider upgrading your case.

I would have to check how many 3 pin headers there are on the board

This is a bit over budget but if you sold your old case and card you should get around €120- €140 for the pair.

The case has good cooling performance and silent fans + sound dampening for the internal components.

How about this? The case comes in 2 other colors as well.

I found a Gigabyte 7950 on the "Selling personal gear" Thread for €200 So I could go with that or is the cooling better on the HIS one?

if you are referring to my ad then i will do you a deal of 290 for the graphics card and the ssd if you're interested, so youd be saving yourself another 10 there anyway and the ssd im selling is better (not by that much, but a small bit). it hasn't been used either, as in nothing has ever been installed on it although it's been taken out of its box.

wait and get some advice on which cooler is better first though as i've never used the HIS one

If it's a triple fan gigabyte windforce then there's not much difference in the cooling and €200 is a great price.

That card looks massive, would that fit in my current case? Any chance of you going any lower indough :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 231 ✭✭alex1997123

Actually you know what forget that, I'll take you up on that deal of €290 for the graphics card and SDD if you could post them to Dublin and can I pay through Paypal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,857 ✭✭✭indough

I can do that no problem as long as you cover the postage and paypal costs. Won't be able to send it out until Monday though. I doubt it would cost too much

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 231 ✭✭alex1997123

Got any idea how much it would cost to post it here?

That a great deal in fairness, if I'd only had money I'd have snapped up that HD7950 a few days ago. :pac:

Hi Alex, if you do plan on taking me up on that offer would you mind making the offer on the advert linked in the other thread (via adverts.ie), I just want to keep the ad itself above board. Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 231 ✭✭alex1997123

Alright man, I'm going to take you up on that offer. Just about to make the offer of 290 on Adverts. I'm Alex9715 on Adverts :)

Edit: Wait, **** was I suppose to offer 305 on Adverts :/

I know it's a bit late but I'm assuming a 450 Watt psu is going to be ok for 7950

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

Yes the super flower amazon is decent. The card would use around 200w of power. Your cpu is rated for 77w and the rest of the system would be 50w max.

    Awesome thanks Bloodbath :)
