Which of the Canary Islands?

    Hi

Myself and 2 friends are looking for somewhere for a 5 day break in May of next year and we would like to get the sun.

We all have young kids (who are NOT coming!!) and we're going for a long-awaited break and to celebrate one of the girls 40th.

We basically want somewhere where we can lounge around the pool during the day and have dinner and a few drinks at night. We thought the canaries might be best because it's where we're most likely to get the best weather. We are not interested in sight-seeing and would rather not have to hire a car. We're just going for a few days to re-charge the batteries.

We were thinking of Lanzarote and Puerto Carmen but we've nothing to compare it too. None of us have been to any of the Canaries in years. Budget is obviously a factor (ideally max about €350 per person - we've priced flights and they're about the €180 mark - so hopefully flights and accommodation for the 3 of us for under a thousand) and the plan would be to get a 2/3 bed apartment in a complex with a nice pool - may have to do it privately.

Does anyone have any suggestions? We want some nightlife - but nothing mad - just a few nice bars and restaurants where we won't feel like complete mummy-geriatrics or be surrounded by a bunch of 18 year old half naked clubbers!!

    Thanks a million

Well, me & missus oh are off to La Gomera, it's an hour ferry ride from Tenerife and supposed to be relatively quiet in comparison to its neighbours.

Avoid puerto del Carmen if you don't want to be around young party goers. I was in lanzarote last year & we stayed in a place called Playa Blanca which is about a 30/40 min bus ride from PDC. I was 22 so me & the girls did the bus ride a couple of nights for clubbing and honestly it was such a contrast. PDC was not appealing at all and even though the clubs were fun, that was the only positive about the place. Playa Blanca is much more laid back and scenic. I would think it would suit 30/40 something's more than PDC, I was half that age and I loved it! You could walk around in the evenings without being pestered to come into pubs. Lots of places to eat to suit most budgets and plenty of bars. Theres a bar called Jungle thats outdoors along the beach & serve amazing cocktails, then on certain nights they transform it into a nightclub around 12am. We loved having a few cocktails there at the start of our nights. Oh & we had a villa..much better than apartment rental.

You don't need to go to Canaries to find good weather in May.
What about Costa del Sol and a much shorter flight.

if you are just going for the sun/beaches then south of gran canaria is your best bet, has better beaches and weather than lanzarote

but like someone said if its just sun/pool/drinks you are after then costa del sol or the algarve is closer

Thanks everyone. we looked at average temperatures and it seems that in May, the canaries is about 7 degrees higher than the Algarve. However, we'll take another look. But if anyone has any other suggestions I'd love to hear them. Thanks

I was in Majorca in May this year and it was in the mid to high twenties.

Costa Teguise in lanzarote generally has more family/older visitors and has a lovely beach. It can get windy though.

The nightlife around the main square is busy, but not full of clubbers. It has a selection of British and Irish bars, but isn't all union jacks and Celtic shirts.

It is only €25 for a cab from the airport as well, which is very handy.
