Mugging gone wrong!

Ha so I was on the way home in the early hours last night, after the few pints through Dublin 1 and was approached by two junkie types, late twenties who looked like they needed a fix badly. They started walking with me, one beside me and one in front of me. I was on the inside of the pavement.

Next thing the guy in front says he has to take a pi$$ and run about 10 feet to a doorway but just stands there watching us approach. The guy beside me started squeezing me in tighter to the inside and I realised in about 5 feet I would suddenly find myself right between the two of them. I stopped and sidestepped behind your man and onto the road and as I did he turned and punched me full force into the left cheekbone.

Now I'm not one for fighting and have hardly ever been in a fight in my lifebut as it happens I took up boxing a year and a half ago. So when he hit me, on reflex and to my own astonishment I immediately punched him back and then gave him two more, splitting him open and knocking him to the floor! The other fella seemed to bottle it straight away when he saw me hit his associate so I turned and got the he'll out of there wit your man still trying to get himself up off the ground.

I woke up this morning with a lump on my face, but I'm feeling dam good about myself!

I'd like to put this in the context of all of the "Young man assaulted, died later in hospital from head injuries" news stories we've seen over the last few years.

Good on ya lad :) Makes a nice story but it could have ended so much worse if you didn't react the way you did.

Fair play to you sir, side note
    never..ever stay on the inside,
always stay by the road. That way
you have if needed, to move away
from trouble. Glad you are Ok :-)

Yep. Fair play OP, but you should have had a bit more situational awareness in the first place

They are like Rats.....ya never see them but they are never too far away!!

    This is a joke....right?

Nope. I wouldn't let two junkies get this close to me and I certainly wouldn't be blindsided by a man who was walking beside me

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 996 ✭✭✭HansHolzel

There was another incident last night, on Portobello Bridge. Lead mugger (non-Irish) came off the worst in the physical exchanges but his associates (possibly gypsy or maybe further east) extracted some money from the victim's wallet in the course of the action. Keep yer eyes open around that canal.

Not everyone is as streetwise/sober. OP says it was the early hours and he'd had a few pints. Stuff like this could happen to anybody (obviously 6'6 bodybuilders are probably not going to be mugged).

I grew up in what would be called one of the "rougher" parts of Dublin and have worked in city centre for 17 years so would like to think I'm fairly aware of my surroundings or can spot trouble. Yet a few months ago some little sh*t on a bike snatched phone from my hand as I got off bus three minutes walk from my own apartment.

    Don't blame the victim

Fair play OP - revel in the good feeling that you have! :D

I often daydream about being in that kind of situation and what I'd do. It normally ends with me magically achieving very slick karate\boxing skills and easily grounding my would-be assailants, and then walking off laughing, while they struggle to get up off the floor

Well done OP! a lot of the time they are weak from the years of drug abuse, and just presume that people are soft and wont hit back. you did the right thing, knock them all out when you have the chance. absolute scum.

Yes my thoughts exactly. If the shock didn't disorientate me and somehow I was able to put Skanger Mc Skangs down with a thump or two, a swift hard kick to the underside of his scrotum would be the preferred parting shot and if the gods were smiling down would hopefully render him impotent and prevent breeding of skangettes to carry on the family tradition.

Not blaming the victim, just saying he could have been a bit more careful. Depending on the amount of pints he'd had my point could be moot, but he did seem quite aware in the story

I was thinking that, take his wallet and his phone, even if just to prove a point. Not sure these people have any pride left to be hurt.

But I guess you wouldn't want to leave them even more desparate and ready to take even more extreme measures.

Back to a good kick in the goolies so.

(also on afterthough I don't think I'd want to stick my hand in a junkies pockets)

Fair play, IMO you handled that situation perfectly.

And for those saying the OP should have been more "situationally aware", he realised that something was about to happen, he reacted by trying to move away and then fell back on his training to defend himself before legging it.

He handled it better than most of us would have in the same situation.

I honestly think I would do this if I was ever mugged and got the better of my attacker. Or at least take one of his shoes. Not a believer in kicking or hitting a man on the ground but I can be a spiteful little bastard in my own way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,627 ✭✭✭Lawrence1895

Fair play to you, OP. Those junkies got what they deserved, it will hopefully teach them a valuable lesson.

Hope though, you washed your hands after ;)

as opposed to letting them voluntarily mug you so they feel no need escalate their attacks in future?

Well Done O.P. btw. Hope they've learned their lesson the fuppers. Could have easily been an elderly man walking home or to a Taxi or something after his couple of weekly bevvies. :( That kind of thing can really shake ya. :/

closest i ever came to this scenario was when i lived in limerick, walking home on a skinful from my mates, a yungfla who was walkin' along with a youngin pulled a boxcutter and asked me for my wallet, not being the of the bruiser class my hidden survival brain jumped in and prompted me to laugh and say " are you for real?, the dole's tomorrow! whatcha think i have on me?" after about 5 seconds of silence they legged it, and i rather uncalmly went home and changed into my brown trousers while the emmersion heated.
