Will these be any use? I was looking to pick up a jacket and waterproof trousers for the Winter.

How does it work, this stuff comes on sale to the general public on the 26th and it's first come, first served?

Any thoughts on the two 'maybes' - tool kit and tri suit?

Yes, comes on sale to the general public and then it's first come, first served basis.

I've bought winter cycling jackets in Aldi before and I'm happy enough with them. You'd still need to layer up a bit under the jacket but they do the job.

Never bought waterproof trousers there so can't comment on them.

Some of the stuff is good - socks, gloves etc. Some is only so-so in my experience - not very breathable. But for the money, none of it could be classed as 'bad' value. Depends whether you want long term or only every now and then use. If the former, you might be better off paying a bit more and getting better quality in a bike shop/ on line.

And yes, it's first come - first served on the day. Best advised to get down there as early as possible as not all stores carry the same amount of stock and sometimes the best value stuff goes quite quickly.

Got one of those waterpoof trousers 3 years ago, still fine for me. The only negative thing is, you sweat quite a lot under them.

It's a pity they don't have the glasses this time around.

I'll drop in to possibly get a water bottle, and maybe also have a look at the shoes.

Anyone thinking about the bike stand bear in mind that the top of it has to be fixed to the wall. Very unstable otherwise.

Bought the light set last year, the mount is perfect as a mounting on a helmet. Socks are same as my €20 pairs, tri suit got good enough reviews on the tri forum, reflectors and small lights are handy on the commuter, arm and leg warmers are great for cold evening training spins.
I never trust their tools, but at that price, meh. Those gloves look warm, hat looks ott but warm, shoes only go up to size 10...

Most of the tools are worthless in my experience, especially the cone wrenches and chain tool. Couldn't get much use out of the freewheel extractor either. Never tried the BB remover, but wouldn't have high hopes. Spoke wrench, multi tool and tyre levers are fine.

I find the clothes in general to be ok, haven't bought the waterproofs before. The lights are ok, fittings are made of cheap brittle plastic and have shattered on me before.
I'd agreed the tools are generally too soft to use. Steer clear!
In terms of the water proof pants, just use the Winter Cycling Trousers with a pair of cycling shorts. It'll keep you warm and wide proof, and cooler than wearing the waterproof trousers.

Ok, so seems tools, even though pittence, would be a waste of that pittence! Cheers for the heads up!

Might still give the tri-suit a go... although that's an issue for another forum!

Anybody know if the SPD cleats come with the shoes?

I got the toolkit last year and did some work, changed cassette with the chain tool, and a few other jobs, my experience is they are fine. Exceptions are the plastic tyre levers and the philips screwdriver - the rest, allen keys, cranktool, etc. are good enough.

Pretty sure they do not come with cleats. Cleats usually only come with pedals.

Cheers, the cleats came with the previous shoes I bought in Decathlon.

Bearing in mind the previous point about fixing it to the wall, how is the the bike stand in general? I badly need some way of sorting out the mess of bikes (not even all mine!) that get dumped in my office

The socks are pretty good and well worth getting a few pairs.

The waterproof trousers are OK (ish) - they aren't the most breathable, but as you can pay 10 times that for waterproof trousers I wasn't expecting much. As I have a shower at work I just let my legs get wet A bigger issue is the leg length. If you have a generous waste like me they will be too long and the Velcro fastening at the ankle isn't great when the legs are bunched up.

I'll give the winter jacket a go this time to see what it is like from a breathability point of view and maybe the gloves. I'll even buy that under helmet cap thing as I've been told by my daughter that wearing a swimming cap isn't a good look.....

I bought the bike stand last year and it's been great. Gets one bike up off the floor and out of the way. The only thing to note is the hooks where you rest your top tube are not padded, and may scratch your paintwork. I taped some foam to them and paint is still perfect.

It's a bit dearer than the Aldi junk, but CRC have an X-Tools 18 piece kit for €48, reduced from €75 right now.

That looks exactly like the Aldi kit in different livery. I suspect in this case, dearer doesn't necessarily mean better!

Was hoping for some sort of bag to carry my pump,spare tube and tyre levers,currently stuffed into the back pocket on my jacket.
Saw a guy the other day with a nice bag strapped onto the cross bar,nice narrow profile, would be ideal.

Ill probably grab some socks and maybe shoes.

I bought the jacket this time last year. It's the exact same as the one in the pic.

Check the hole centers on the bottle bracket, last time they had it, they weren't properly spaced.

Have never seen anything like what I witnessed this morning at Aldi in Rathmines. Was like a feeding frenzy in the zoo.

I rolled up at just before 9 but there was a queue of about 10 people there before me. By the time the doors were opened, the crowd had swelled and there was a stampede to where the cycling gear was. A lot of folk pushing, barging and jostling to get what they wanted. People snapping at each other, elbows everywhere, and a lot of 'anoraks' present it seemed to me, and I don't mean the gear.

Anyway I got what I wanted and departed.

Just back from Nutgrove, all the mens merino base layers were gone, but everything else was there. Only went up for spare batteries, which were at a good price.

Got the xl merino wool base layer in Clane earlier excellent fit which surprised me, and some socks
Seemed to be a bit of a schmaozzle over the soft shell jkts and anoraks !

Cheers for the info, I was going to head up to Parnell street after work to get the jacket in a medium. Was there many left or even any in medium? Nothing worse than travelling and all thats left is huge sizes they can't shift or over ordered!

Ah shoot, I was actually back in there at lunchtime but I didn't take any notice of the jackets. Judging by everything else though, it'll be slim pickings - very little left in the baskets (the jackets were hanging up).

No lights at all, a few arm warmers etc., very few jerseys (presumably weird sizes), etc.

Of course, they didn't have the one thing I wanted. Typical.
