Freezer box flap snapped off - affecting fridge?

    Hi,

I have just moved into a new flat in the last few months. There was a huge build up of ice in the freezer of the fridge/freezer which caused me to break off the freezer flap not long after moving in. :(

Ice starting building up in the fridge part, whilst things weren't freezing properly in the freezer part, despite huge amounts of ice building up (and beginning to build up in the fridge part). I should also point out that on a 1-7 temp setting, it was at 7 which I think is the lowest. I changed that to around 2-3 earlier this week. This of course led to melting of ice that had build up at the top of the fridge.

Soooo, I've defrosted it completely. Finished at 2am this morning. It's slow enough to cool down again, I'm guessing this is normal. I've set it to seven just temporarily, just to hasten the cooling.

I know that the freezer flap can be replaced, but the landlady will have to pay someone to do it, I think, so isn't mad keen (understandably, as it's outside wear and tear), and I can't afford to do it myself. The flap itself isn't expensive to buy, but it's more just installing it that's the issue.

So, what I'm wondering is, what are the consequences of not having a flap on the freezer box? The fridge model is LG GC-151SA. Will there not being a flap affect the fridge temp now that it's properly defrosted? Will the freezer ever work properly without it? What would be the ideal setting to put it to? I'd love if I could get the freezer to work, but if not, I'd at least like to get the fridge functioning properly as it's pretty vital.

It's weird, the back of the freezer box is continuous with the fridge too, I can stick my hand up into the freezer from the back of the fridge, and this is how it supposed to be, apparently.

    Many thanks!
